2017 Renault Duster EDC – Automatically Tough

In the ever-growing SUV market, consumers are requesting various different combinations of engine, drivetrain and chassis. They want a variety of features and naturally, price comes into play, for everyone except that 1%. Renault has convincingly captured the affordable segment of the spectrum with their convincing Duster.

Launched in 2013, Renault has moved over 12 000 Dusters since and that number continues to grow. We quite enjoyed the go-anywhere, do-anything approach of the Duster in its 4x4-guise, and Renault has just expanded their range to include even more variety into the mix.

While not all Dusters will see the beaten path, many will be used as daily drives on the highways and byways of our South African roads and as such, owners don’t necessarily require 4x4 capabilities, but would still like the benefits that come from driving an SUV; the raised seating position, the improved ground clearance, the storage space and of course, appearances come into effect here as well – SUVs look cool!

New EDC Duster

Renault now offers their premium diesel model, the 1.5 dCi Dynamique, with their EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) gearbox, that the Duster range may now enjoy the comfort and convenience of automatic shifting. Perfect for traffic situations as well as just about anywhere else you wish to take the Duster.

At this current point in time, the EDC is only available with the 1.5 dCi engine combination and only in a 4x2 layout. This model does, however, benefit from the safety features found on the 4x4, namely ESP and traction control, but not discounting the features that are standard across the popular range; ABS, Emergency Brake Assist, as well as front and side, driver and passenger airbags.

Tried and Trusted Power

While not as capable on the rough stuff as the 4x4 model, the ease of use when commuting makes the Duster EDC a valuable companion. The 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine is well renowned and has proven itself to be an efficient and reliable power plant for not only the Duster, but for a host of other models both in and outside of the Renault brand.

Developing 80kW at 4000rpm and a healthy 250Nm at a very capable 1750rpm, the 1.5 dCi engine has more than enough to get up to speed and stay there without excessive throttle input. This helps it return a combined fuel consumption figure of 4.8l/100km – according to the book. Our figures of 6.5l/100km in the urban environment, in relatively heavy traffic, was more than acceptable. The engine can, on occasion, be a little clattery in a traditional diesel way and under certain throttle loads but is a small price to pay for the efficiency.

Cabin Comforts

The interior trim is undoubtedly the Renault Duster’s Achilles Heel with hard plastics doing duty throughout most of the cabin. Touch points have been treated to leather-feel materials and one can forgive the rest of the interior when you remind yourself of the price of the Renault Duster. The build quality if robust and hard-wearing, we just always find the use of plastic too generous when we drive the Duster.

Standard equipment levels are more than respectable too, further distracting you from the material concerns, with the Dynamique model coming fitted with a 7-inch TFT MediaNav touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth, USB and AUX inputs, cruise control, electric windows, reverse camera with PDC (Park Distance Control) and optional leather upholstery.

Dusters are spacious vehicles, offering up an above average boot of 475-litres and cabin space is just as generous with ample shoulder room and rear legroom.

Despite the lack of four-wheel drive, the Duster 4x2 still has ground clearance of 210mm, and rides on high-profile 16-inch tyres, wrapped around 16-inch black alloy wheels.

Price

Undoubtedly the best part of the Duster experience is parting with your hard-earned money, because it’s only a small amount. The Renault Duster 1.5 dCi Dynamique EDC costs a mere R299 900 and when you compare the specification levels against its rivals, there’s very little questioning needed.

All Dusters carry Renault’s 5-year / 150 000km mechanical warranty, 6-year anti-corrosion warranty and a service plan of 3-years / 45 000km.
