Cons:

  • Single-engine option: Some rivals offer a wider range of engines, including larger or more powerful options.

  • Potentially questionable "Pixel Box" wireless charger: The device's illuminated, translucent design might make it a target for smash-and-grab theft.

  • Slightly higher price point: It is positioned as a premium offering, which might make it more expensive than some competitors.

  • Relevance: The Grandland is competing against Chinese offerings, legacy brands, and vehicles within the Stellantis stable.

Pros:

  • Bold and distinctive styling: The new design stands out in its segment.

  • Luxurious and high-tech interior: The cabin feels premium with a focus on ergonomics and advanced features.

  • Excellent ride comfort: The FSD technology provides a smooth and composed ride.

  • Comprehensive safety and driver-assistance features: The GS Line is well-equipped with standard safety tech.

  • Generous standard features: The GS Line has a kit with heated, ventilated, and massaging seats.

It aims to compete in the highly contested mid-sized SUV segment against rivals like the Volkswagen Tiguan, Kia Sportage, and Hyundai Tucson. The Stellantis influence seems to have overwritten the German aesthetic, and the Grandland comes across much more Mediterranean. We spent a week with the singular model and found that it is much more than the sum of its parts.

Styling

The 2025 Grandland's design is heavily influenced by Opel's "Experimental concept," giving it a futuristic and modern aesthetic. Upfront is the now recognisable Opel signature Vizor grille, which integrates the 3D lightning bolt logo and an LED strip that headlines the fixture. The Intelli-Lux Pixel HD Lighting is flanking the grille, incorporating over 50,000 individual LED elements. Looking down the side, you get 19" alloys, a two-tone floating roof, and black cladding, giving it a sporty, yet rugged look. Around the back, the Grandland logo is embossed into the auto tailgate and just above that is the illuminated Opel name centred along an illuminated strip.

The Drive

Comfort is the game's name here; the interior is comfortable with its body-hugging seats and functionality, and the secondary drive characteristics are superb. Feedback through the steering wheel is direct and composed, while the throttle and gearbox programming are on point. It glides effortlessly along the road but tightens up nicely when ushered into a corner. It's still an SUV, so don't expect sports car dynamics, but it handles itself well.

Performance

A single engine option, a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine, powers the Grandland GS Line. It produces 134kW and 300Nm of torque, delivered to the front wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. The vehicle features frequency-selective damping (FSD) technology, which aims to provide a comfortable ride over rough surfaces while maintaining a sporty and composed feel during dynamic driving.

Space and Comfort

The interior of the new Grandland truly shines, showcasing a significant upgrade in design and material quality. The driver-focused Pure Panel Cockpit digital displays feature a large, integrated 16.0-inch infotainment screen and a 10.0-inch digital instrument cluster. While dominated by screens, Opel has thoughtfully retained physical buttons for essential functions like climate control. The front seats are also a major highlight; they are certified by AGR (a German campaign for healthier backs) and offer power adjustment, heating, ventilation, and a massage function for the driver and front passenger.

The increased exterior dimensions translate to more interior space, particularly for rear passengers who get an additional 20mm of legroom. The boot capacity has also grown to 550 litres, expanding to 1 645 litres with the rear seats folded. The cabin also has clever storage solutions, including a "Pixel Box" wireless charger and phone pockets on the front seatbacks. Interestingly, the cabin fabrics are made from 100% recycled materials, a nod to sustainability.

Safety

The GS Line has a comprehensive suite of safety and driver-assistance features. Stellantis' Intelli-Drive 2.0 ADAS system bundles several advanced features, including semi-automated lane-change assist, intelligent speed adaptation, and traffic sign recognition. Other standard features include adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go, blind spot monitoring, autonomous emergency braking, and a 360-degree Intelli-Vision system with a self-cleaning rear camera.

Opel Grandland

Fuel Consumption

Opel claims a combined fuel consumption of 7.0 L/100km, with an open-road figure as low as 5.3 L/100km. We covered numerous driving conditions during our week-long road test and returned a combined cycle figure of 8.2 L/100km.

The Verdict

The Grandland is a fantastic vehicle that is fun to drive, comfortable, and stylish. As lovely as it is, though, it is overshadowed by some of its stablemates, which feature similar systems, and many of its competitors in the segment offer more for the asking price.
