BYD Shark 6 vs Ford Ranger Raptor Drag Race

The battle for the crown of South Africa's fastest bakkie is done! We pair the venerable Ford Ranger Raptor 4WD against the hybrid BYD Shark 6 AWD in a quarter-mile drag race to see which one comes out on top. The arguments are finally settled!

There's no denying that the Ford Ranger Raptor is a powerhouse of a double-cab. Fitted with a 3.0-litre, twin-turbo petrol V6 produces 292kW and 583Nm of torque. It's an exceptionally capable machine when the going gets rough, thanks to its Fox suspension and Baja drive mode, but let's face it - most Raptors spend most of their lives on tarmac, where they're able to terrorise all and sundry with their outright power and 4WD system. We used to think the Volkswagen Amarok V6 was strong with its 190kW, but the times have changed, and the Raptor was the new king.

Now, there's a new contender in the form of the plug-in hybrid BYD Shark 6 AWD. Chinese firm BYD is no stranger to high-performance vehicles, having made its mark with a range of class-leading electric vehicles. Combining this EV experience with a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine has allowed them to create a 321 kW monster. With a claimed 0 to 100 km/h time of 5.7 seconds, on paper, it's the fastest double-cab on sale in South Africa today.

We decided to settle the arguments once and for all by lining up a Ford Ranger Raptor alongside a BYD Shark 6 in a 400-meter drag race to see who wins.

The results will surprise you! Watch the full video below.
