What to do with the licence plate when selling a car?

The licence plate is usually sold with the car. An exception will be when it is a personalised number plate or a standard registration number with sentimental value. It is possible to swop these registration numbers, particularly if both vehicles were/are registered in the name of the same person. Transferring a registration number which is in the name of another person can be somewhat problematic.
