So the time has come to sell your car, but there are two ways to go about this: selling privately or trading it in to a dealer. Each route here has its advantages and disadvantages, but ultimately you want two things: the most money and a seamless experience. Let's delve into the two methods.

Private Sale

In a private sale, you're in charge of nearly everything here, cutting out the middleman. This includes listing the vehicle on various platforms, taking pictures, and using other media to enhance the ad's quality. You dictate the price based on what the vehicle is worth; you're more in control of the vehicle's condition.

Advantages

With private sales, you can get more money out of the sale than you would with a trade-in. You're in charge of the negotiations as well. You gain experience about how a marketplace works. Finally, you're dealing directly with the buyer.

Disadvantages

This method takes more time and effort. There's also a significant amount of admin required, like heading to the licensing department to transfer vehicle ownership and handle the fees associated with it. Not all buyers are a golden standard, you can get difficult individuals and you're also more at risk for scams if you don't know what to look out for.

Tips to consider for private sales.

Trade it in

When trading in a vehicle, it's typically a case of you driving into a dealership, speaking to a salesperson, negotiating a deal, and walking... well... driving out with a new car.

Advantages

This has the least hassle as the dealership handles nearly everything. The transfer or ownership and admin related to licensing, the funds, and everything are either transferred to your bank account or the value of your old car is applied to your new car.

Disadvantages

Since they're a business, dealerships need to make money, and they have to contend with vehicle market values. Unfortunately, it's likely you won't get the best deal on your old car. Plus, there are also other admin costs on the dealership side that have to be factored in.

Which is the best for you?

That depends on your current situation and what you're looking to do. If you're selling the family car and need to upgrade, then the dealership is the most hassle-free method. If you're not confident in selling privately, then rest assured, the dealerships are here to help. Perhaps you have a desirable sports car and have a bit of experience under your belt with the automotive marketplace, then a private sale is probably better for you. You don't mind the effort, then a private sale will be in your favour.
