The good news is that BMW and MINI are sought-after and retain their value relatively well. Some models retain their value better than others, of course.

At the moment, SUVs are highly popular and are outselling sedans by quite a large margin. The Range Rover Evoque, VW TIguan and Toyota Fortuner are examples of SUVs that retain their value the best, at around 90 percent!

What kind of depreciation can I expect?

For the 1.5-litre turbocharged MINI hatchbacks, you can expect depreciation of about 22 percent, depending on mileage and the specific model, options fitted, the colour, accident history, and so forth. In other words: If you paid R382 000 for your new MINI Cooper Hatch 3-door (manual), in a year from now it will be worth approximately R297 000: about 78 percent of its original price.
