Can I sell my car and retain a private number plate?

Whether you think they are cringeworthy or not, personalized, or vanity number plates are a thing and even you can get one. Do you get to keep it when you sell the car though?

Selling a Car

Alphanumeric not!

For whatever reason a South African motorist may have, they are able to apply for and register a vehicle with a personalised or vanity number plate. These plates forgo the standard alphanumeric system present on all roadworthy SA vehicles and are replaced with individual words or shortened phrases.

The vanity plate is not only reserved for government ministers and posh businessmen, No, even you the humble motorist can have one too. All it requires is some time and patience, a few hours at the traffic authority, and a considerable amount of money and you can have your very own vanity plate, as long as it's not obscene, racist, or deviates from our standard alphabet, you're good to go!

How to get yours

The first step here is to pick your vanity text, keeping in mind that it must still comply with the provincial norms (ie; TCP 382 GP- KRZ DAD GP) approach your traffic authority with form SLN!, your ID, drivers license, vehicle registration for the vehicle that will get the personalised plate and the required permitting fee (differs by province).

The registering authority will then process the application and check if the requested vanity plate is correct and is not duplicated, if everything checks out they will process and give you a letter of authority that will allow the number plate maker to make your new vanity plate.

They will also issue you with a registering letter, SNL2, and PLN2 forms that you will need in order to register the vehicle with that plate.

The best part of all of this is that the plate is issued to you so when it comes time to sell the car on you just de-register the car from the personalised plate and you can then re-register for a new car with your personal plate.

Failure to do this will result in the vanity plate moving on with the vehcile. If this all sounds like too much work you may be right, but yet again, you get to be a KRZ DAD or HOT MOM for life.
