Where do you find the airbags on a Suzuki Dzire

In cars priced in the R150 000 to R200 000 price bracket, dual airbags are now considered par for the course. Suzuki’s DZire small-sedan is one of these, and yes, it does come standard with two airbags.

Suzuki’s DZire is a new nameplate in South Africa, having been launched a couple of months ago alongside the new Swift hatchback. In fact the DZire sedan is built in a different factory to the Swift, but essentially, yes, this a Swift with a boot added on.

In terms of the Suzuki brand hierarchy, the DZire and its hatchback stablemate are on the second rung, with the smaller entry-level  Celerio hatch coming in at about R26 000 less than the DZire. So this makes the DZire one of the cheapest cars out there on our market but not that cheap!

Pricing for this modest little  car kicks off at R161 900 for the 1.2 GA model, rises to R177 900 for the better-equipped 1.2 GL and tops out at R191 900 for the GL automatic. All models in the range have dual airbags.

Where do I find the airbags on a DZire?

The airbags are pretty much where you’d expects to find them. The driver’s side front airbags is housed in the centre of the steering wheel, as is standard practise. And the passenger side front airbag is housed in the passenger side of the dashboard.

Along with twin airbags, the DZire comes equipped as standard with ABS brakes, and it also features Brake Assist (whereby full braking force is applied automatically when a quick movement is sensed on the brake pedal, indicating an emergency).

Other DZire safety equipment

Other safety equipment fitted as standard includes daytime running lights and a high-level third brake light, as well as ISOFIX child seat mounting in the outer rear seats. As with all models recently launched on the South African market, the only place to buy replacement airbags, should these be necessary after an accident, is through a Suzuki dealership.

Replacement airbags for many older models  are in fact available through a very small number of private airbag replacement companies in this country. But as any DZire out there on our roads will still be under factory warranty (the standard Suzuki warranty is three years/100 000 km), any private work on the car, or the use of non-franchised parts, will mean the warranty being invalidated.
