If you've lost your driver's license, it's not the end of the world, and your driving in it! Here is how you obtain a new one.

How do I go about replacing my lost driver's license?

The first thing you need to is make a call to your nearest DLTC (driving license testing centre) to confirm how much it will cost, and how many ID photos you will need. Every province is different, and prices may change without notice.

In Cape Town, expect to pay R140 for the license, and R45 for a temporary license. In Johannesburg, the license itself will cost you R228, and the temporary license R72. We'd still recommend a phone call, just to be sure you that don't stand in the queue for three hours, only to be told you didn't bring enough cash or photos.

Do I need to retake the dreaded driving test?

That won't be necessary. You'll only be doing an eye test and your fingerprints will be taken. You need to bring your glasses with you or wear your contact lenses, if you drive with them.

Now, make sure you have the following documentation on hand when you visit the DLTC to get your temporary paper license, and to apply for your permanent one:

  1. Your ID book and a copy thereof. If you don't have an ID, your passport will do.
  2. Proof of address. A utility bill should do the trick.
  3. Two to four identical black and white ID photos. (Some DLTCs require four, that's why you need to phone the relevant testing centre beforehand.)
  4. The results of an eye test. Most DLTCs have this testing facility on the premises - having it done in advance at the optometrist, however, will save you some precious time in the queues.
  5. A completed Application for Driving License form - also known as the DL1 form. Yet again, filling this in at home and bringing it along with you, saves your feet the anguish of a long waiting period in the queue. If you have changed addresses, you will need to fill out an NCP form (Notification of Change of Particulars) as well.

Where can I download the DL1 form?

You can download it right

Will it take long?

You get your temporary license on the spot, and your new driver's license will be ready in about four to six weeks.
