Top 5 movie soundtracks to keep you entertained in traffic
By Ané Theron
If you keep switching from one radio station to the next while you try to keep your cool in traffic, perhaps a movie soundtrack is in order? Here are our top 5 favourites of the moment.
1.Black Panther
This was the must-see movie of 2018, and what a ride it was, from beginning to end! Well, you can relive all the action of this Marvel Studios creation as you listen to the movie soundtrack, which was a Billboard Music Awards nominee, featuring artists like Khalid, Future, Jorja Smith, 2 Chainz, Swae Lee, Anderson, Paak, Babes Wodumo, Jay Rock, Schoolboy, Saudi, and such. It was released in February and also won the American Music Award for Top Soundtrack. The original score was composed by Ludwig Göransson with original songs by Kendrick Lamar.
2. A Star is Born
Currently sitting at no. 1 of the US Billboard charts, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's 'A Star is Born' Soundtrack is pure bliss for the ears. If you haven't gone to see the movie, you should do yourself a favour! Even if it's just to hear Bradley's voice harmonise with Gaga's as they sing 'Shallow' in front of a live audience...it's stuff that'll give you goose bumps. Large portions of the film were indeed filmed at the Glastonbury festival, and there are a multitude of new songs written especially for the film, by Cooper, Gaga, and her co-writers Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt. The song 'Shallow' has already reached the top of the record charts in many countries abroad, and with good reason!
3. Baby Driver
Edgar Wright's Baby Driver is about a young getaway driver who finds himself coerced into working for a crime boss, in a heist that is doomed to fail from the get-go. The movie got mixed reviews, but one critic says it's "as much fun as you're going to have in a movie theatre this year." Well, I can't say that I've seen the film, but it is on my list for movie night. In the meantime, the music critics are raving about the soundtrack. It features a range of artists, old and new, such as Queen, Blur, Barry White, Young MC, Simon & Garfunkel and Bob & Earl. Great road-trip music for lovers of classic retro rock and everything in-between.
4. Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2
When Chris Pratt's character, Peter Quill, puts that tape into his Walkman, you know that stuff's about to go down. If you were a fan of the film, you will love the soundtrack too. The original score was composed by Tyler Bates and the soundtrack made him a very rich man - Awesome Mix Vol. 2 was the US's 8th-best selling album of 2017, with 600 000 copies. Songs include The Jackson 5's 'I want you back', Fleetwood Mac's 'The Chain', and 'My Sweet Lord' by George Harrison.
5. Deadpool 2
I can't say that I was a huge fan of the movie - too much senseless violence, offensive language, and such. Not that I mind the odd expletive, but in this film it all gets taken a little too far, unnecessarily. Whether you hated it or loved it, at least the soundtrack is decent, especially if you like heartfelt power ballads like 'I'm All Out of Love'! But fear not, there's also a fair bit of Skrillex and DJ Shadow thrown in, and the Deadpool 2 is the first soundtrack that earned a 'parental advisory - explicit content' warning label!
