Save rands at the pump: Fuel-efficient driving for your GAC Emzoom

One of the newest entrants to the crossover SUV market in South Africa, GAC has been making waves with its impressive styling and future-forward tech, but how does it fare in the economy stakes?

Arriving in South Africa in late 2024, the GAC range of vehicles entered an increasingly saturated Chinese-origin SUV market. The first two models to be introduced to SA consumers were the Emzoom and Emkoo, crossover SUVs with impressive styling and punchy engine and drivetrain setups.

As fuel prices continue to concern South African motorists, it's wise to adopt driving habits that help you get the most out of every litre. The GAC Emzoom, with its claimed fuel consumption of as low as 6.4 L/100 km, is already a relatively efficient vehicle, but with a few smart techniques, you can improve that number even further. Here's how to save rands at the pump with your GAC Emzoom.

Drive with a light foot

  • Accelerate and brake smoothly: Rapid and sudden braking are two of the biggest culprits of poor fuel economy. The more you "pedal to the metal," the more fuel your engine burns. You can significantly reduce fuel consumption by gently easing onto the accelerator and coasting to a stop instead of slamming on the brakes. Think of it like this: every time you brake, you're wasting the momentum you've built up, and that momentum came from burning fuel.

  • Anticipate traffic: Look ahead at traffic lights, intersections, and other road users. By anticipating when you'll need to slow down or stop, you can ease off the accelerator and coast, rather than braking hard and then accelerating again.

Maintain a steady speed

  • Use cruise control on highways: The GAC Emzoom comes with cruise control, an excellent tool for maintaining a constant speed on long, open roads. Varying your speed up and down, even by small amounts, can increase your fuel use.

  • Avoid high speeds: Most cars, including the GAC Emzoom, are most fuel-efficient when travelling between 50 and 80 km/h. Driving at excessively high speeds increases aerodynamic drag, forcing your engine to work harder and consume more fuel.

Utilise the GAC Emzoom's technology

  • Use 'Eco' mode: The GAC Emzoom offers different driving modes, including 'Eco', 'Comfort', and 'Sport'. Activating 'Eco' mode will adjust the engine and transmission settings to prioritise fuel efficiency over performance. This is a simple and effective way to save on fuel, especially during your daily commute.

  • Take advantage of the gear display: The GAC Emzoom's dashboard may display the current gear. Pay attention to this, especially if you have a manual transmission, as shifting up early at low revolutions per minute (RPM) is a great way to save fuel.

Keep your car in top condition

  • Check your tyre pressure. Under-inflated tyres increase rolling resistance, which makes your engine work harder and burn more fuel. Ensure your tyres are inflated to the manufacturer's recommended pressure, which can be found in your owner's manual or on a sticker inside the driver's side door jamb.

  • Remove unnecessary weight: The heavier your vehicle, the more fuel it needs to move. Remove any items from your boot or cabin that you don't need, such as sports equipment or heavy tools.

  • Reduce aerodynamic drag: Roof racks, luggage boxes, and other external accessories create wind resistance. Remove them when not in use to improve fuel efficiency.

  • Regular maintenance: A well-maintained engine runs more efficiently. Please stick to your GAC Emzoom's recommended service schedule to ensure everything works as it should, from the air filter to the engine's fluid levels.
