How to replace the car battery on a Proton X50

The latest brand to re-emerge in South Africa is Malaysian-made Proton. These new vehicles are a far cry from the Proton's of old and are packed with trickle-down tech that is found in previous generation Volvo cars. Proton is owned by Geely Automotive which also owns Volvo, so it was bound to happen.

With so much new tech installed that needs a constant supply of strong 12v power a healthy battery is needed to keep things running smoothly and if you find that some of your gadgetry no longer works efficiently it may be time for a new power source. Changing out the battery yourself will allow you to flex your DIY muscle and is relatively straightforward and only requires simple tools, and we can show you how it's done.

You will need:

Panel removal tool
12mmm socket + extension and driver

Let's get it done

1. Open the bonnet

2. Locate the battery

3. Remove the plastic cover

4. Use the panel removal tool to remove pins and remove the plastic cover

5. Use 12mm to remove the bracket then remove the air filter housing

6. Use 12mm to remove the battery bracket

7. Use 12mm to undo the negative terminal

8. Use 12mm to undo and remove the positive terminal

9. Slide the battery out and replace

10. Assemble in reverse order

Pro-tip: Use a battery saver to prevent loss of infotainment presets etc.
