How to replace the car battery on a Citroen DS 5

The Citroen DS 5 was the range-topper for the DS range and not only offered sporty driving characteristics but also unique styling which still looks modern today. The DS 5 was available in four derivatives, three of which was powered by a 1.6-litre, turbocharged, petrol motor with peak performance rated at 147 kW and 275 Nm of torque. The last of the four came fitted with a 1.6-litre, naturally aspirated, diesel engine rated at 120 kW and 340 Nm.

What is needed?

- Size 10 socket

- Socket wrench with an extender  

- Torch

 

Step 1

The first step is to remove the protective cover situated on top of the air filter box. This cover will clip out with enough motivation and doesn't have any screws.

 

Step 2

Disconnect the air pipe leading from the airbox to the engine. Depending on your model, you might need a Phillips screwdriver to loosen a circlip holding the pipe in place.

 

Step 3

Remove the airbox. This once again can be done by pulling on the airbox in an upwards direction as it has no screws or bolts. 

 

Step 4

Open the plastic flap on top of the battery marked with a (+) and lift the black clip to release the tension on the positive pole. Now remove the cable and stow it on the side of the battery.

 

Step 5

The L shaped fusebox is located on top of the battery. By pressing on the clips on the sides, remove the cover to reveal the fuses situated underneath.

 

Step 6

Once the cover is removed, locate the screw located lower down on the securing strut on the front of the battery. Using the 10mm socket and socket wrench, remove the screw and bolt. 

 

Step 7

Once the screw is undone, proceed to carefully lift the fusebox from the front while pressing on the clips holding it in place. Once the fusebox starts to lift, disconnect the harness cable situated on the front.

 

Step 8

Now with the fusebox moved to the side, proceed to remove the plastic cover from the battery. Next use the 10mm socket and socket wrench fitted with the extender to undo the screw on the negative pole of the battery. Once loose, carefully remove the cable and stow towards the rear of the battery.

 

Step 9

Situated on the bottom left of the battery is a securing plate, use the 10mm socket with the socket wrench and the extender to loosen the plate and remove it.

 

Step 10

You can now proceed to remove the old battery, taking care that it does not catch on any of the cables. You can now install the new battery and follow the steps in an inverted manner to secure it into place.

 

Caution

While removing the battery seems simple if you follow these steps, there is a possibility that you could damage parts during the process. Where and if possible, rather let the professional technicians at a Citroen dealership assist you with the replacement or even the professional staff at a battery fitment centre.
