How to replace a lightbulb on a Volkswagen Tiguan

Do you remember as a child, running to your bed as you switched off the light because of what could be lurking in the dark? Well driving with a broken headlamp is the adult equivalent, accept now it could result in an accident or even worse, hitting a pedestrian with your car. Although we might not have any guides on how to cure a child's irrational fear of the dark, we do have a step-by-step guide on how to replace a broken lightbulb on your first-generation Volkswagen Tiguan.

 

What do you need?

- Replacement bulb. 

- 5 minutes of your time.

Steps

Step 1: Switch off your vehicle and locate the bonnet release lever and pull to release the bonnet.

Step 2: Locate the securing clip release for the bonnet at the front of the vehicle and open the bonnet. Secure the bonnet into place with the support rod.

Step 3: Starting at the driver side, locate the rear of the headlamp cluster. The circular access point on the far left when you face the light is the headlamp, the access point on the right is the high beam.

Step 4: Simply turn the plastic cover, to reveal the rear of the headlamp.

Step 5: Locate the small plastic clip and turn it to release the headlamp from its position.

Step 6: Holding on the circular metal base of the lightbulb, separate it from the power cord. Be careful not to put pressure on the glass lamp or pull from the glass surfaces as it could break and cause injury.

Step 7: Align the replacement bulb connectors with the plug and insert using the metal base. Avoid touching any of the glass surfaces as the natural oils on your hands could alter the surface temperatures of the lightbulb and cause it to fail during use. 

Step 8: Align the tip of the bulb with the opening in the headlamp cluster and insert. Turn the bulb to secure it back into place.

Step 9: Once the lightbulb is in place, secure the protective plastic cover to the back of the headlamp cluster to avoid any water or debris from entering.

Step 10: It is recommended that if you replace one lightbulb that you do the other headlamp bulb at the same time. On the passenger side of the vehicle, the headlamp bulb will be located on the far right of the cluster when you face the car. Repeat the same process as on the driver side.

Step 11: Before closing the bonnet, switch on your vehicle and test the headlamps. 

Step 12: If the headlamps are working, you are done and can proceed to close the bonnet.
