As these cars have been on the market now for a while, some of them may require wiper blade replacement. This is a job you can do yourself, but you need to know how the blade is attached to the wiper arm.
The wiper arm is essentially a strip of metal connected at one end to the wiper motor rotators, and at the other end to the blade. It is the blade end that we are concerned with here.
Step-by-Step
Step 1. Visualise that the wiper arm is a metal strip with a hook on its end. That hook curls downwards back on itself at its extremity y, with the end of the hook being underneath the flat part of the blade.
Step 2. This step is actually the second visualisation, before you take any action. When you withdraw the arm from the blade frame, you are going to be doing so in the opposite direction to what may at first seem logical. This is because the blade slots onto the end of the hook. So to withdraw the blade you have to move it back towards the wiper arm, rather than away from it. But first you have to unclip it.
Step 3. With this in mind, flip the wiper arm away from the windscreen. The blade will now dangle from the arm, and note how it swivels. Careful inspection will reveal that the wiper arm curls around the point where the blade swivels, in a framework, or swivel-housing.
Step 4. To remove the blade it has to be un-clipped. This clip is located inside the swivel-housing on the blade frame. Using a fingernail or fingertip, push this retaining clip upwards. Now, while pressing the clip upwards, slide the blade off the hook of the arm, back towards the thicker point of the blade arm where it mounts on the wiper motor rotators. You may have to wiggle the blade backwards to get it to release, but don’t force it.
Step 5. The old blade now slides off the end of the simple wiper arm hook. The new blade now simply slides back onto the hook and you will hear a click as the blade locks in and the clip springs into the lock position. This blade can now be lowered onto the screen and you can repeat the procedure with the second blade.
Step 6. With both new blades installed, check that the wipers work the way they should before driving off on your next journey.
