Part of the cost of vehicle ownership is paying your annual car license renewal fees. As you might expect, the larger your car is, the higher the fees are. This is because much of the collected fees contribute to the maintenance of the road infrastructure. Licensing fees vary according to the weight of the vehicle, and from province to province
These days, your average road car generally weighs from 900 kg (for a small city car) to around 2 500 kg for a large sedan or luxury 4x4.
- In Gauteng, the total annual license fee for a car of up to 1 000 kilograms, but not exceeding 1 250 kilograms is R492.00.
- In the Western Cape, it will cost you R642.00.
- In KZN the aforementioned car will cost you R672.00 to license, per year.
- A large SUV weighing in at 2 500 kg but not exceeding 2 750 kg, will cost you R 1 620.00 in Gauteng, R 1 458.00 in the Western Cape, and R1 566.00 in KZN.

You get a 21-day grace period in which to renew an expired motor vehicle license. The grace period is calculated from the expiry date of the current license disc.
To avoid penalties (calculated at 1/10th of the appropriate fee for every month that the license remains unpaid), be sure to pay your license fees on time.

For renewals at the Post Office, take the following with you: The MVL2 renewal form, ID (plus a copy of your ID), proof of address, and the required fees.
