At launch-time of the fifth-generation Honda CR-V here in South Africa, in mid-August 2017, Honda claimed that the fourth-generation CR-V was the most popular SUV in the world. Some nine million CR-Vs had been sold globally, and Honda had a good footprint in South Africa too, with this classy, bullet-proof model range.

The latest generation

The latest-gen Honda CR-V comes in four models. All of them now use a CVT gearbox, which has proved controversial in some circles. The entry model is the 2.0 Comfort FWD, which uses a naturally-aspirated two-litre engine producing 113 kW and 189 Nm of torque. Next up in trim level is the 2.0 Elegance FWD, also using the two-litre four-cylinder motor and front-wheel-drive.

The two upper-level models, in Executive and Exclusive trim levels, use a 1,5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, and employ All-Wheel Drive. These are badged as the 1.5 T Executive AWD and 1.5T Exclusive AWD. This small-capacity turbo engine engine produces 140 kW and 240 Nm of torque, and. consequently, a lot more performance than the two-litre, non-turbo model. Different wheel and tyre sizes fitted to the FWD and AWD models

Honda CR-V owners are generally extremely happy with their steeds, because Hondas have such excellent reliability records. However, no matter how reliable your car is, you need to take care of your tyres on a regular basis. It is important to know which tyres your CR-V has fitted.

The 2.0-litre models come with 17-inch alloy wheels shod with 235/65 R17 tyres. The more potent 1.5 turbocharged  AWD models, with a top speed potential of over 200 km/h, use 18-inch alloys, fitted with the lower profile  235/60 R18 tyres.
