The most controversial aspect of the first-generation Datsun Go was that it was launched here without airbags and ABS braking. The new model launched here in mid-November 2018 addresses this issue.

The good news for Datsun fans – and there are many in South Africa – is that with the latest 2019 MY extensive facelift, all models in the Datsun Go range now come with dual airbags, for the driver and front-seat passenger.

Four years ago the Datsun Go made headlines for the wrong reasons when it was introduced here without any airbags or ABS braking. Later, airbags were offered in high-trim versions, but only for the driver.

The MY2019 Datsun Go has dual airbags

Now both front seat occupants are afforded airbag protection, as well as ABS braking, which is a big step forward in enabling a driver to avoid an accident in the first place!

Where are the airbags located?

The driver’s side airbag is located in the obvious position – in the centre of the steering wheel. The passenger-side airbag is initially more difficult to spot. It is located on the upper edge of the dash board, with the  airbag designation marking placed quite close to the left-side  front roof pillar (or A-pillar, as it is called in motor-manufacturing jargon).

The dashboard warning lights include airbag warning lights that initially flash on when the ignition key is turned,  and then switch off once the Datsun’s management system has detected that all is well with these supplemental safety restraint systems.

In the case of an accident, where can replacement  airbags be sourced?

As the  2019 MY  Datsun Go is a brand new model, it will be under warranty for the next few years. The Go comes with a three-year year/100 000 km warranty and any repairs in the warranty period have to be carried out by an accredited Datsun-Nissan  dealership. This includes accident repairs.

As of now, the Datsun Go comes in two model variants, the Go mid at R144 500 and the Go Lux at R165 500.
