Which Volkswagen Polo Trim Depreciates The Fastest?
By Chad Lückhoff
We evaluate the current market value of the 2018 Volkswagen Polo to see which trim derivative depreciates the fastest.
It's one thing getting behind the wheel of a new car, but what about when it comes time to sell? You want to know that you can still get the most money back when you think of upgrading or changing to something newer.
We're looking at the depreciation on the 2018 Volkswagen Polo hatch based on their trim levels and their current, average market price. Naturally, the exact value of the vehicle will be dependant on the original spec level, the options specified, the mileage and overall condition of the car.
There were four primary trim levels and their prices at launch in 2018. While the Comfortline was now offered with a DSG option, we're looking at their overall value.
Launch price (January 2018):
| Trendline | R235 900 |
| Comfortline | R264 700 |
| Highline | R286 200 |
| GTI | R375 900 |
Their current retail price (new, without options):
| Trendline | R245 500 |
| Comfortline | R276 200 |
| Highline | R298 700 |
| GTI | R389 100 |
Average used price and variation over new price:
| Trendline | R235 000 | – R10 500 |
| Comfortline | R295 000 | + R18 800 |
| Highline | R290 000 | – R8 700 |
| GTI | R413 000 | + R23 900 |
Verdict:
While some of the models appear to have appreciated, one must remember to factor in the additional options specified at the time of sale, which would drive up the new price considerably.
The biggest loser is the Trendline model, losing over R10 000 in 12-months. As Volkswagens cheapest Polo offering, many new buyers will go easy on the options in a bid to keep the car affordable and the price down. This reflects in their used value and a similar trend can be applied to the other models, taking their spec level into account.
