With the cost of living on the rise, we are all looking at ways to lower the cost of personal mobility. For those looking at adding a Volkswagen to their garage, fuel efficiency is an important consideration, so let's have a look at the German brand's three cheapest models and which variants are the lightest on fuel.
Polo Vivo
Volkswagen's cheapest new vehicle is the locally produced Polo Vivo, a product that is based on the previous-generation Polo, following in the footsteps of the iconic Citi Golf. The cheapest Vivo is the 1.4 Trendline model, however, it is the turbocharged GT model with its 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine that has the lowest claimed fuel consumption of 4.6 L/100km.
Polo
The latest generation Polo is also built right here in South Africa, but unlike its Vivo sibling, there are only turbocharged engine options, the most frugal of which is the 1.0-litre three-cylinder paired with either the 5-speed manual or 7-speed automatic gearbox. The claimed fuel consumption for all models that use this engine within the range is 5.4 L/100km.
Caddy
The third cheapest Volkswagen currently available new is the Caddy, specifically in Cargo 1.6 panel van guise which retails for R420 600, however, it is not the most frugal Caddy. That honour goes to the Caddy Cargo 2.0TDI panel van which sips diesel at a claimed rate of 5.5 L/100km.
