Which Toyota Land Cruiser Prado trim holds its value better?
It may be ageing, but the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is still an excellent choice for buyers who desire a family vehicle that can go anywhere in comfort. Does this popularity translate into strong resale values as well, and which Prado holds its value better?
Following its most-recent facelift in 2017, the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado also received the diesel engine it deserved all along at the end of 2020. Even so, the older models are still popular in the used-car market, so we decided to evaluate the facelifted Prado’s resale values to determine which trim level holds its value better.
We searched the listing pages here on AutoTrader for 2019 and 2020 model year Prados. We then imposed a mileage limit of 20 000 km per year, and compared the different trim levels’ current market values of those Prados to what they cost when new. Value retention after 3 or 4 years is expressed as a percentage of their initial value, with the highest percentage indicating the strongest value retention.
2019 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 3.0DT VX-L
Value when new: R 969 600
Current Market Value: R 1 024 965
Value Retained: 105.7%
There were eight 2019 Prado VX-L examples listed on site at the time of writing, and the good news is extremely good for owners looking to sell their 2019 VX-l Prados, however, because these cars actually retail for more than their new value after four years – 105.7% value retention is an excellent result in anyone’s book.
2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2.8 Diesel TX
Value when new: R 939 900
Current Market Value: R 919 900
Value Retained: 97.8%
A two-year-old base-spec variant of the updated Prado appears to retain its value very well, despite there being a relatively low number listed for sale.
2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2.8 Diesel VX
Value when new: R 1 060 600
Current Market Value: R 1 125 563
Value Retained: 106.12%
The facelifted 2.8-litre VX-spec Prado is still worth more than it was when new when our milage parameters are in place.
2019/2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 4.0 V6 VX-L
Value when new: R 1 072 600
Current Market Value: R 945 912
Value Retained: 88.18%
The price of fuel and local preference for diesel means that the six derivatives of the V6 Prado in VX-L guise have lost nearly 12% of their residual values, which is still impressive.
Verdict
It’s clear that many more diesel-powered Prados are sold than their petrol counterparts. The VX and VX-L diesel models, regardless of whether they are powered by the venerable 3.0 D4D or the 2.8 GD-6 retain the most value within the line-up.
