Which Renault Captur is the most fuel efficient?
With the crash of the local economy and fuel prices going through the roof, everyone wants to know which cars will be the lightest on fuel. If you've been considering the Renault Captur, a massive saving on your monthly fuel bill is on the cards, if you drive with care.
There are five Renault Capturs in the lineup and three engine derivatives. All are six-speed manual models except for one.
1. Renault Captur 66kW turbo Blaze (R246 900) and Renault Captur 66kW turbo Dynamique (R293 900)
The entry-level turbo Blaze Captur has a 3-cylinder 0.9-litre turbo-petrol engine, just as the 66kW turbo Dynamique has. Average fuel consumption is rated at 5.4 litres per 100 km. Our personal consumption was closer to 6-7.5 litres which is still very decent, and standard cruise control in all models will help you further to conserve the golden liquid, and keep you from getting those pesky speeding fines.
Just a word of warning: with the engine being downsized, you may be tempted to drive this Captur quite hard, which will send your fuel consumption skywards. According to Renault, you'll be able to drive for 833 km until needing to fill up, but this is based on Renault's own average consumption figure of 5.4 litres per 100 km. 2. Renault Captur 66kW dCi Dynamique (R320 900)
Perhaps R320 900 is a big jump from R293 900, but this 1.5-litre diesel Captur with 66kW and 220Nm is just the ticket if your main concern is the conservation of fuel. Renault says average consumption is only 3.6 litres per 100 km which is nothing short of amazing. Realistically, you can expect around 5 litres per 100 km. This model is fun to drive and even more fun to fill up, because you won't be doing it very often.
Renault says you can expect one 45-litre tank to keep you going for 1250, but we estimate that you'll be needing the services of a pump attendant in the region of a thousand kilometres, depending on how and where you drive, of course. 3. Renault Captur 88kW turbo Dynamique (R320 900) & Renault Captur 88kW turbo Dynamique auto (R336 900)
The above-mentioned models are fitted with a peppy 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine with 88kW and 190 Nm. While both are highly desirable, I am a sucker for a diesel engine and will probably lean towards the 66kW dCi Dynamique model, also R320 000. But if you'd rather go for petrol, you can still be sure of good fuel consumption from this engine.
Renault's average figure is 5.5 litres per 100 km (and 5.4 in the auto). In real life, you can expect figures of about 7-7.5 litres per 100 km. Verdict
The diesel Captur wins this round. As for the other two, your final average consumption figure will largely depends on your driving style. On paper, the 0.9T engine looks like it will take you a little further. But as we've said before, you may be giving it everything you've got when you drive it, which will impact your consumption figures negatively.
