Which Peugeot 3008 should I buy: diesel or petrol?

The diesel debate continues with the Peugeot 3008: Should you spend your money on the diesel- or the petrol models?
The multi-awarded Peugeot 3008 was also European Car of the Year for 2017, and is a lovely car to drive. It has everything the modern family desires, it's safe, its design is very fresh, and it also manages to be practical. Despite all of this, the 3008 is not selling as well as it should. South African buyers seem to be wary of European brands, even more so since Citroën has left the country. Renault is currently leading the sales race for the French manufacturers, partly because of its alliance with Nissan. (Visit the Peugeot website here to learn more about the 3008.)
Currently, we have 6 different 3008s on offer in SA:
- The 3008 1.2T Active Limited edition, R378 900
- The 3008 1.6T Active, R424 900
- The 3008 1.6T Allure, R470 900
- The 3008 2.0 HDi Active, R439 900 (diesel)
- The 3008 2.0 HDi Allure, R491 900 (diesel)
- The 3008 1.6T GT Line, R532 900
The answer is a short one...
If I were to buy a Peugeot 3008, the 1.6T Active (petrol) would be my sensible choice. I'd steer clear from the diesel models purely because of the poor quality of our local diesel, which may cause issues in the long run.
Agreed, the diesels are lighter sippers, so you will get more mileage on a single tank. However, if I did buy a diesel 3008, I'd make sure I trade in or sell before the 3008's 4-year/60 000 km service plan comes to an end, ( 3008 also has a 3-year warranty and an optional maintenance plan.) Also ensure that you stick to the recommended service intervals religiously, which is once every 20 000 km.
