Due to a limited selection of electric vehicles (EV) in South Africa at this current moment, you only have two cars to choose from; the BMW i3 and the Jaguar I-Pace. There's a host of hybrid options, ranging from mild hybrid-boost options in the Mercedes-Benz range and Series Hybrids in the form of the Toyota Prius and Lexus UX 250h to the Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) of the BMW i8 and Volvo XC90 T8.
While the hybrids will naturally offer the best range due to their petrol-powered internal combustion engines, they still emit greenhouse gasses and require fuel for propulsion. EV operation is considerably cheaper but their limited range is still a concern for most consumers.
Which EV has the longest range?
The EV with the longest range currently on sale in South Africa is the Jaguar I-Pace EV400 AWD S with a total range of 470 km on a full charge. The BMW i3 may have had an update to boost its effective range and give a total of 260 km but this still falls short of the range offered by the Jaguar I-Pace.
