What used cars can I buy for R120 000 in South Africa?

Looking for something decent that isn't going to burn a hole in your pocket? These SUVs are renowned for being long-lasting.

Buying a Car

All South Africans will agree that local car prices, both new and used, are astoundingly expensive. But what if you only have R120k for an SUV? We look at older models with a good reputation for reliability.

1. Honda CR-V

A silver CR-V.

The Honda CR-V earns its top spot, with mechanics consistently reporting, "This car just does not break." The second-generation models feature bulletproof 2.0L K-series engines that regularly exceed 400,000 km without major issues. The simple engineering approach with minimal electronics means fewer failure points. While parts are slightly more expensive than some competitors, they're rarely needed beyond routine maintenance. These models offer surprising fuel efficiency (8-9L/100km) and comfortable rides even after years of use.

2. Toyota RAV4

An earlier model of the Toyota RAV4.

Toyota's legendary durability means even these ageing examples can be reliable family vehicles and workhorses. The 2.0L VVT-i engines are particularly robust, regularly exceeding 400,000 km when maintained. Parts availability is excellent throughout South Africa at reasonable prices. Older RAV4s have proven themselves incredibly resilient to our harsh conditions, with solid electricals and durable interiors.

Just remember that Toyotas command a price premium because of their reliability.

3. Hyundai Tucson / ix35

A red Hyundai Tucson

These models represent Hyundai's quality renaissance period with excellent reliability records in South Africa. The 2.0L naturally aspirated petrol engines are particularly robust, with timing chains (not belts) reducing maintenance. Parts are widely available and affordable throughout the country. Hyundai's comprehensive warranty meant most early maintenance was properly handled at dealerships. The solid electrical systems and comfortable cabins age well, making these excellent value propositions.

4. Kia Sportage

A silver grey Kia Sportage, first generation.

Sharing a platform with the Tucson/ix35 but often available at slightly lower prices, the first-gen (and others) Sportage offers excellent reliability, particularly with manual transmissions. Hyundai's parts are common, making them available and affordable nationwide. The 2.0L naturally aspirated engines are virtually bulletproof when maintained properly. Sportages from this era have proven exceptionally durable in South African conditions, with fewer electrical issues than most competitors.

5. Subaru Forester

A 2012 Subaru Forester in white.

Subaru Forester stands out as a reliable used vehicle choice in South Africa. It is particularly valued for its renowned all-wheel-drive system that delivers exceptional traction across the country's diverse terrains. While potential buyers should be vigilant about cylinder head gasket issues and ensure the timing belt has been replaced according to the 100,000 km schedule, the Forester's robust construction and practical design make it an excellent all-rounder. Its combination of car-like handling, SUV versatility, and dependable Japanese engineering has stood the test of time.

6. Suzuki Ignis

A turquoise blue Suzuki Ignis.

This compact crossover, or "micro-SUV", offers exceptional reliability with simple, effective engineering. The naturally aspirated 1.2L engine is virtually bulletproof and extremely fuel-efficient. Its lightweight design means less wear on components, particularly suspension and brakes. Compared to other options, you'll find much newer models in this price range. While not a true off-roader, its adequate ground clearance easily handles what local drivers can throw at it.

In need of a bigger car? The Suzuki Grand Vitara is a brilliant used buy and you'll find many decent examples at our dealerships or private sellers.

(Also, consider the Jimny, but they are more pricey.)

7. Mitsubishi ASX

A white Mitsubishi ASX

An underrated option with better reliability than generally recognised. The 2.0L naturally aspirated engine with manual transmission is particularly dependable. Parts availability has improved significantly through established importers across South Africa. These models offer good ground clearance and practical interiors that stand up well to use daily. Maintenance costs are reasonable when using independent workshops familiar with the brand. (This is a 2013 model.)

8. Volkswagen Cross Polo

A silver VW Cross Polo.

While not a true SUV, this crossover-styled hatchback offers elevated ride height with the reliability of the Polo platform. Specifically, the naturally aspirated 1.6L engine models avoid the timing chain issues of the turbo variants. VW's extensive dealer network ensures excellent parts availability throughout South Africa. These models offer good build quality and safety features. Manual transmission models are significantly more reliable than automatics in this price range.

9. Renault Duster

A brown Renault Duster

The most reliable model in Renault's lineup, particularly with the 1.5-litre turbodiesel engine. The 4x4 versions offer genuine off-road capability that exceeds most (compact) competitors. We spotted a few 2017 models with decent mileage on our website.

10. Nissan X-Trail

A black Nissan X-Trail circa 2007.

Spacious and practical with better-than-average reliability, particularly with the 2.0L and 2.5L petrol engines. The simple AWD system is quite durable, and parts availability is good through Nissan's network. These models offer excellent interior space and cargo capacity. QR-series engines have proven durable in South Africa, though they require diligent maintenance. You can avoid models with CVT transmissions and stick to the manuals for maximum reliability.

High-mileage models cost from R80k. You should find a model under 170,000 km that costs about R120k.
