What is the cheapest Volkswagen car?

We take a look at Volkswagen's product range to find out which is the cheapest model on offer.

Buying a Car

Volkswagen translates to "the people's car" and over the years, even though the German automaker has added a variety of premium offerings to its product line-up, it still retains models that are affordable to most average South Africans. In recent times, Volkswagen has even added new variants towards the entry point to their extensive range.

In this article, we will be looking at three models in different segments that are more affordable options for consumers. The segments we will be focussing on are hatchback, sedan and crossover.

Hatchback

When it comes to the most affordable Volkswagen car, it is the Polo Vivo and more specifically 1.4 Trendline variant. The Polo Vivo is based on the previous-generation Volkswagen Polo. The particular derivative discussed comes with a 1.4-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine capable of 55 kW and 130 Nm of torque. The compact offering provides adequate space for five occupants, however, only the front two passengers benefit from airbags.

Sedan

The most affordable sedan in Volkswagen's line-up is the Polo sedan. The current generation will be the last of the sedan models offered by the German automaker, as Volkswagen will be focussing its product line-up to incorporate more crossover and SUV models. The most affordable variant in the Polo sedan range is the 1.4 Trendline derivative which claims to return an average fuel consumption figure of 5.9 L / 100 km from the 63 kW and 139 Nm, 1.4-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine.

Crossover

The Volkswagen T-Cross is a more recent offering from the German automaker and, as the name implies, is a crossover vehicle. Based on the Polo platform, the model is quite capable and offers practical levels of space and trim. The most affordable derivate is the Volkswagen T-Cross 1.0TSI in Comfortline guise which claims an average fuel consumption return of 4.8 L / 100 km from its 70 kW and 175 Nm, 3-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine.
