What is the cheapest Toyota you can buy in South Africa?

If you have your sights set on a Toyota, you wouldn't be making a mistake; Toyotas are perceived as the world's most reliable cars. Let's take a look at the 5 most affordable Toyotas that money can buy in SA right now.

Buying a Car

Looking to get into a brand new Toyota? There's plenty to choose from, whatever your new-car budget. We've listed the five most affordable Toyotas and filtered the price from low to high. Click on the heading to be taken to our news or reviews section on the Toyotas in question:

1. Toyota Agya

The Agya is built in collaboration with Daihatsu and is loosely based on their Ayla model. It's powered by a 1-litre, 3-cylinder powertrain with 49 and 89 kW which is more than sufficient in a car with kerb weight as low as the Agya's. On-road refinement and stability at speed is very good considering the price, with low fuel consumption that hovers around the 5.3 litres per km mark in real life conditions. It's rather spacious too, with enough legroom for four passengers, even taller ones, and a boot which fits the small family's paraphernalia.

Driving the Agya home from Cape Town to Hermanus with the South-Easter howling at full speed, really put the Agya to the test - and it passed with flying colours.

2. Toyota Starlet

The Toyota Starlet, also knows as the rebadged Suzuki Baleno, was face-lifted in 2022 and given a power and equipment boost as well, while the cost for the new model only increased by R1000.

...the new Starlet gets a more potent 1.5-litre engine with an output of 77 kW and 138 nm versus the previous 1.4 powerplant’s 68 kW with 130 Nm of torque. This output increase will be more tangible in the manual models but it feels powerful enough in the auto for the average Joe’s daily needs.

The fuel economy in the city came to about 6.6 litres per 100 km, but traffic was quite heavy. All models are equipped with ABS, EBD, (hill-start assist is new), and stability control, while the Xi and Xs models have rear parking sensors. The Xr-variant gets a rear-view camera too. All models have two airbags but the Xr model is equipped with curtain airbags, bringing the total to six. - Ané Albertse

One of the cabin highlights is the new, larger touchscreen (7 inches in the Xi and Xs, 9 in the Xr trim) and the kids will love the fact that there are 4 USB ports in the cabin as standard. The boot is a generous 314 litres for the price and segment.

The Starlet is the fun-to-drive, frugal family hatchback you've been waiting for.

3. Toyota Rumion

Yet another passenger vehicle built with Suzuki, the Rumion is based on the Ertiga and serves as a replacement for the Toyota Avanza. It may not be the best-looking car around, but MPVs are rarely acquired for their handsome design.

The 1.5-litre Rumion seats seven and scores an impressive 4-star safety rating despite not having traction control, so this means it's structurally sound. But it's on rough terrain where the sturdy Rumion is surprisingly good - and this is great news because in many parts of SA, the road surface is a mess.

The Rumion is superior to its predecessor in every way: it’s larger and more spacious, more practical, much nicer to drive, more economical, and better-equipped. This “Suzota” (or is that Toyzuki?) is a most-welcome replacement, and should quickly see similar (or greater) sales success, compared to its long-lived predecessor. - Martin Pretorius

4. Toyota Urban Cruiser

First came the Suzuki Vitara Brezza, then the Toyota Urban Cruiser was born. Yet again, more or less the same car, but Toyota has added unique features to make it truly theirs, like the on-board Wifi/telematics system which is standard across the board in ALL Toyota models listed here (and beyond), which can be utilised via the MyToyota App.

The Urban Cruiser is the ultimate city SUV and is well-priced too, offering urbanites and rural dwellers who can't quite stretch to the Corolla Cross, a truly versatile vehicle that is equally at home on tar and gravel alike.

5. Toyota Corolla Quest

Based on the Toyota Corolla, the Quest has always been next in line to receive the latest upgrades from the previous generation Corolla models.

The Quest is the epitome of sensible, family or fleet motoring, offering everything that makes the Corolla sedan great, but in a more affordable package. Under the bonnet, you'll find Toyota's smooth and trusted 1.8-litre petrol-engine with an output of 103kW and 173Nm. The front wheels are driven by the Japanese superbrand's 6-speed manual or CVT gearbox.

Overall, the Corolla Quest is very comfortable on the road. It glides over all types of asphalt effortlessly and quietly. Turning the steering wheel is simpler than breathing, and braking brings the Quest to a stop on a dime. - AutoTrader staff writer
