What is covered under the Lexus RX manufacturer warranty?

The fact that Lexus is bold enough to offer such a strong warranty for their products says a lot. It speaks volumes about their trust in the quality and integrity of their cars, and it’s an enticing reason to consider buying a Lexus instead of a mainstream premium-brand vehicle. We evaluate the Lexus RX’s warranty and maintenance plan, to determine how far its coverage goes.

Buying a Car

The Lexus manufacturer’s warranty covers their RX mid-level crossover against manufacturing- or material defects for 7 years or 105 000km (whichever occurs first). For petrol-fuelled RX’s, this cover can further be extended to 8 years with no mileage limitation, ensuring total piece of mind for a very long time. It gets even better for hybrid buyers, who will receive an extension to 10 years (again, with no mileage limitations) instead of the 8 years that apply to non-hybrid RX’s.

Standard Warranty

The Lexus RX has a 7 year/100 000km warranty as part of its standard spec sheet, covering repairs and adjustments to correct defects in materials or workmanship of any part supplied by Lexus. This basic warranty is intended to cover almost everything, including the body shell and the electrical system.

The warranty does not include normal wear-and-tear items, however, which means that operating fluids (lubrication, refrigerant and coolant), spark plugs, brake pads and discs, wiper blades, filters and fuses are not covered.

The powertrain is covered for engine parts, including the cylinder block and -head, all internal parts, seals and gaskets, the transmission (transmission case and everything inside it, torque converter, engine mounts, engine- and transmission control unit, seals and gaskets), and the all-wheel drive system. Hybrid derivatives also have battery coverage for 8 years or 195 000 (!) km, so there’s no need to worry about an expensive drive battery replacement anytime soon.

Extended Warranty

Lexus also offers two added-cost “Unlimited Warranty” options. The one applies to petrol-powered RX variants, and extends the coverage to 8 year with an unlimited mileage. RX Hybrid buyers can get an even sweeter deal, because these derivatives offer a warranty extension to 10 years (again with unlimited mileage).

Buying a pre-owned Lexus RX

Purchasing a used Lexus RX should be an equally low-risk proposition, especially if the buyer selects the “Lexus Pre-Owned Warranty +” option. This warranty can be added to a used RX’s purchase price, and is supplemental to the original manufacturer’s warranty. It will commence as soon as the original warranty expires, and will remain active for 2 years (or a total vehicle mileage up to 250 000 km).

Corrosion and Perforation

The body shell is covered for 6 years, against body panel perforation due to corrosion that results from defects in material or workmanship. There is no mileage restriction on this section of the warranty, either.

Maintenance Plan

This is additional cover that covers the maintenance requirements of the Lexus RX, and runs for the same duration and mileage as the warranty: 7 years or 105 000 km. Under this plan, the wear- and service items listed earlier are covered, as well as the labour at the Lexus dealership.

Like the warranty, the maintenance plan can also be extended to run for a longer time span. Enquire at your local Lexus dealer for more info, as there are various options available from which buyers may select.
