While purchasing a vehicle with financing will require a few more documents such as proof of employment or income, if you have saved up all the funds to purchase your next vehicle cash, there are fewer documents you need to supply to the seller to conclude the deal. These documents will be needed for the seller to indicate the change of ownership to the department of transport.
What documents do you need to supply?
ID Document
In order for the seller to submit a valid notification of change of ownership (Yellow form) to the department of transport, they will require a certified copy of your green barcoded ID or SA ID card to prove who the new owner is going to be. Thus take along your ID document as well as certified copies on the day you are concluding the sale.
Proof of residence
The department of transport will require the seller to provide proof of residence of the future owner. Thus they will need you to bring along a valid document reflecting your name and physical residential address. Here are some examples of documents that will be sufficient:
- Utility bill
- Bank statement
- Tax certificate
- Recent active lease or rental agreement
- Municipal rates and taxes invoice not older than 3 months
- Valid television license renewal letter
- Home loan statement
- Motor vehicle registration/license documents
Sale agreement
While in most cases the seller will draw up or source a standardized sales agreement or proof of purchase, in the case that they have not, having one in place and prepared could prevent any delays in the purchasing process. Be sure to have two copies, one for the seller and one for yourself should you need to provide proof of purchase agreement during the vehicle's registration.
