What car can I buy for R100 000 in 2022?

The R100 000 price category is popular for first-time buyers, but what does those price point actually get you now in 2022?

Buying a Car

When looking at cars at the R100 000 mark on AutoTrader, there were around 2 400 vehicles listed for sale at the time of writing. That means that there are no shortages of options at this price point, however, since we are looking at providing some sage buying advice, we will set some limitations, including that the vehicles need to be ten years old, or newer, with less than 120 000km, which should eliminate too may potential reliability problems.

When looking at our new search parameters, the pool of cars that qualify for our list has been reduced to 550, at the time of writing. While we have set these parameters, it does not mean that every single vehicle that has more mileage or is older than what we have set in place must be avoided at all costs, but generally speaking, the older and higher mileage a vehicle has, the more wear and tear it will have been exposed to.  Let's have  look at the breakdown of vehicles available at this price point, with our parameters set in place, but now by vehicle type:

Hatchback

Represented at over 70% of the vehicles found during our search, the humble hatchback is certainly the most popular choice at this price point. Products such as the Volkswagen Polo Vivo, Ford Figo, Nissan Micra, Kia's Picanto, the Hyundai i10, the Chevrolet Spark, Suzuki Swifts, and Renault's Sandero all being common at this price point. Here are the hatchbacks that qualified for our search criteria.

Single cab

As the second most numerous of the models found during our search, the half-tonne bakkie serves as a workhorse in the local market, with two primary products qualifying for our criteria, namely the Nissan NP200 and now discontinued Chevrolet Utility. Here are the single cabs that qualified for our search.

Sedans

The third most popular vehicle type at this price point is a sedan, with models ranging significantly from luxury barges like the Volkswagen Passat to the likes of the Chevrolet Aveo, Chevrolet Sonic, the Hyundai Accent, Toyota Yaris, Toyota Corolla, the Ford Figo, and the Volkswagen Polo Vivo. Here are the sedans that qualified for our search.

SUV

There are a few SUVs that can be had at this price point that are reasonably new, such as the Fiat 500L, Nissan's Juke, the Ford Kuga, the Dodge Caliber, and the Jeep Compass, but the options are limited. Here are the SUVs that qualified for our list.

MPVs

If you can handle the Datsun Go+ or FAW Sirius, then an MPV can be had at this price point, but in limited numbers. Here are the MPVS that qualified for our list.

Panel Van

Those looking for a practical workhorse in this category have the option of a Volkswagen Caddy, the Polo Vivo Xpress, Fiat's Fiorino, and the Chevrolet Spark Pronto. Here are the Panel Van options we found.
