We compared Volvo V40 Cross Country engines, and the fuel-economy crown goes to...

With budgets tighter than a frog's behind, we're all driven to purchase cars that will make our fuel last longer. If you're thinking about buying a Volvo V40 Cross Country, which engine will give you the highest mileage?
As much as I like engines to be powerful, it's not so much fun when you have to start forking out extra for that performance at the fuel pumps. So which V40 Cross Country engine will be the friendliest on your wallet? Let's take a look at how big these engines are, and what their fuel economy is like. Please bear in mind that these consumption figures are based on the manufacturer's data, and that real-life driving conditions will most likely be higher. Testament to this is my review of the Volvo V40 Cross Country T4. Volvo said its average fuel consumption is 5.6 l/100 km, but in reality, it came closer to nine. I had so much fun driving it that fuel economy was the last thing that I considered!
An educated guess would be to say that the diesel models should get closer to their ideal averages, as mentioned below. And remember that the harder and faster you drive, the higher your fuel consumption will be!
The V40 Cross Country line-up currently has a selection of 4 engines: The D3, T4, D4 and T5.
- The D3 is a 2.0-litre diesel engine with output figures of 110 kW and 320Nm on tap. 0-100 will be reached in 8.5 seconds. It uses 4 litres per 100 km and its fuel range is a somewhat liberal 1550 km.
- The T4 is a 2.0-litre petrol engine with 140kW and 300 Nm of torque. It will reach a 100km from standstill in 7.1 seconds and uses 5.6 litres per 100 km. In a perfect world, it will keep going for approximately 1100 km on one tank.
- The D4 is also a 2.0-litre diesel, good for 140 kW and 400 Nm. Its 0-100 sprint time is 7.5 seconds. Its powerful engine uses only 4.3 litres per 100 km. Range is estimated to be a rather ambitious1442 km.
- The T5 is the most powerful engine in the range, also a 2.0-litre petrol, with 180 kW and 350 Nm, reaching a 100 km per hour in a mere 6.1 seconds. It consumes 6.4 litres of petrol per 100 km. Range is 891km, but I'm pretty sure that 700 km is more realistic, because you will definitely be tempted to drive with a heavy right foot.
Verdict
Both the D3 and D4 engines should give you ample mileage for your money. If budget is a concern, take a look at some pre-loved Volvo V40s here. The less expensive D3 will have you saving a bit more on monthly repayments as well as diesel.
