South Africans love to modify their cars. Whether it be outdoor gear or electronics, they just can’t leave it “factory”. We take a look at five things South African motorists can fit onto their Toyota Hilux.

Fire up your Hilux with these aftermarket upgrades

Bakkies are phenomenally popular in South Africa and one of the first things new owners do is set out to customise them according to their own tastes. Often times when buying a used double cab, a new owner might want to change things up a bit. Check out the five things that are most often upgraded on the Toyota Hilux.

Aftermarket audio system

The factory fitted audio system in the Hilux is actually very good, but should owners want a little bit more functionality, they can opt for an aftermarket entertainment system. These can have touchscreens with built-in navigation, DVD players, Android Auto and Apple Car Play.

Tonneau Cover

Most owners will also want to protect their valuables in the load bin and if not fitted when new can opt to fit a canvas and metal ribbing styled cover or a fibreglass lid. For more pressing security, hard plastic or aluminium “Armadillo” rolling covers can be fitted.

Nudge and Rollover bars

Finished in matt black or high polished chrome, these cosmetic fitments won’t save your vehicle from an impact, but can protect against small bumps and make a handy place to put your fishing rods.

Side Steps

The Hilux has a good ride height which makes off-roading easier but can make getting in and out difficult. Fitting a set of side sill steps can protect this area during off-road adventures and creates a space for your feet to allow easier access to the cab.

Wheels and Tyres

The fitment of a rugged set of wheels and tyres can not only improve the looks of your Hilux but can also aid in off-road capability and ride height. Be careful not to go too aggressive though, as this may impede day to day use in the city.
