The Hyundai Tucson is now into its third generation here in South Africa, after a naming detour which saw its second generation branded as the ix35. We take a look at all three generations to ply our roads, and see just how efficiently they work with fuel.

Crossover SUV hit

The first-generation Hyundai Tucson was a surprise hit with the South African audience. Thousands of these models were sold, and many of them are still plying SA roads. This success continued with the follow-up, which was renamed the ix35 in our market, and seems set to continue with the latest generation, which saw the return of the well-regarded Tucson name.

First Gen (2005 -2010)

2.0 Petrol                                     8.9l /100km

2.7 V6 Petrol                               13.6l /100km

2.0 CRDI                                       8.5l /100km

Second Gen (ix35 2010 - 2015)

2.0l Petrol                                     9.9l/ 100km

1.7l CRDI                                       5.2l/ 100km

2.0l CRDI                                       6.0l/ 100km

Third Gen (2015 – current)

1.6l Turbo Petrol                          8.5l /100km

2.0l Turbo Petrol                          8.9l /100km

1.7l CRDI                                        7.9l /100km

2.0l CRDI                                        8.3l /100km

Getting on in years

Straight off of the assembly line, the first gen 2.0 GLS had a very decent, fuel efficient naturally aspirated engine and delivered fuel economy of about 8.5l/100km.

In 2018, we have an example of a 2008 model that has been well maintained and serviced, and almost 10 years later, still delivers 9.1l/100km.

The efficiency numbers do fluctuate depending on environment.

City numbers with A/C will see figures at roughly 11.2l/100km

Combined cycle with A/C switching will see roughly 8.9 – 9.2l100km

Freeway numbers surprise though, seeing numbers returned at around 7.2l/100km

The Tucson engines age well and maintain a modicum of efficiency as long as they are well maintained and regularly serviced.
