Top 6 Safety Features on a Hyundai Grand i10

Small cheaper cars are not as safe as larger more expensive models because they offer less protective metal in the event of an accident, and less costly safety equipment. But technology has nevertheless  made them a lot safer than before, as is the case with the Hyundai Grand i10.

 

Hyundai’s Grand i10 could be considered a replacement for the immensely popular Getz, which could be described as an entry-level  full-sized hatchback, whereas the (non-Grand)  i10 was a much smaller car.

At the time of the Grand i10’s launch in 2014, Hyundai retained the smaller, previous-generation  i10 in its line-up as its entry-level model. But since February  2018 the Grand i10 is the entry-level model, with the i10 dropped from the model line-up.

The pricing of the Grand  i10 covers quite a broad spectrum, as there are six derivatives. There are three 1,0-litre models using the three-cylinder 48 kW engine, and three more up-market models using the 1,2-litre  64 kW “Kappa”  four-cylinder engine. Prices start at R167 900 for the 1.0 Fluid and top out at R227 900 for the top-of-the-range 1.2 Fluid Automatic. The less-powerful  1,0-litre Grand i10 effectively replaced the smaller i10, which was criticised in some quarters by being a bit tardy in featuring some basic safety devices. This is no longer the case with the Hyundai Grand i10.

1. Dual airbags. As has become the standard for even the smallest of entry-level cars, the Hyundai Grand i10 features two airbags across the range, one for the driver and one for the front passenger.
   
2. ABS brakes. Once the preserve of big luxury cars, these days most entry-level hatchbacks have ABS braking, also known as anti-lock braking systems. This means in an emergency you can (and should) hit the brake pedal as hard as you can, and the ABS braking system prevents the wheels from locking up and skidding. A wheel that is still rotating enables much more effective braking than one that has locked up and is skidding.
   
3. Rigid passenger cell. The Hyundai i10 features a very strong body shell construction. Some 29 % of the body shell is constructed of high-tensile steel and this is used to provide optimum protection for the occupants of the car. Hyundai is one of the few motor manufacturers to produce its own steel.
   
4. LED daytime running lights. When running at highway speeds, or even in town, daytime running lights are very effective safety devices as they draw attention to the car’s approach. This is particularly noteworthy on the highway where these LED daytime running lights can be easily spotted in the rear-view mirror.
   
5. Remote steering wheel controls. Remote steering wheel controls are fitted to all Grand i10 models. This includes buttons for the audio system and Bluetooth connectivity for cell phones, and an integrated microphone for phone usage. This helps in keeping the driver’s attention focussed on the road ahead and on the rear view mirrors.
   
6. Fog lamps. All derivatives come with front fog lamps, improving visibility in challenging conditions.
