The Mercedes-Benz GL-Class can be a slightly confusing one if you don't keep a constant finger on the motoring landscape pulse. In short, the GL-Class has only been around since 2006 and is technically in its third incarnation at present. It started life as a full-size SUV that was based on a widened and lengthened ML chassis and has since developed into its own, bespoke product.

In 2006 the GL-Class was unveiled as a product that would slip in between the ML-Class and the utilitarian G-Class (G-Wagon), offering three rows of seats, added luxury and of course, beefy engines to choose from. During the second generation, with the facelift in 2016, the name was officially changed to GLS-Class, this is now the same model naming format that is used to this day.
But what's the GLB then!?
Mercedes-Benz has opted to use the GL prefix for all of their crossover and SUV offerings now, with the final letter denoting the size of the model. These largely correspond with the sedan or hatchback offering that wears the same letter. This means that you can expect A-Class levels of trim and space from the GLA, and C-Class-style trimmings in the GLC-Class. That makes the GLS the largest and most luxurious offering in the SUV segment as it is similar to the S-Class.
