Top 5 extras you should fit on your new Audi A5

Buying a new Audi A5? Here are a few practical optional extras that we think are worth the additional expense.

 

The entry-level A5 Coupé 40TFSI has a base price of R625 500 while the more practical and arguably better-looking four-door Audi A5 Sportback version (also in 40TFSI guise) costs R640 500. These 2.0-litre turbocharged base models offer a decent amount of standard spec but there will be many temptations once you take a look at the options list.

In the spirit of practicality, there are certain things I won't even consider, such as ultra-low profile tyres that make the ride hard, unless you spec air suspension. So, instead of going down that expensive rabbit hole, take a look at these options that will enhance your A5 without costing the earth...well, sort of!

 

1. Audi Matrix LED headlamps

As far as exteriors go, forget about the pearl effect paint finishes from R35 821. I'd stick with a free solid colour (Brilliant black, Ibis White or Quantum Grey) or perhaps a metallic finish such as Tango Red Metallic or Navarra Blue Metallic at R 2 784.15. Remember, it all adds up! 

But here's where I am going to drop R20 377,19: On the Audi Matrix LED headlamps, including dynamic turn signal in the front and rear (these are what we refer to as sequential indicators). This package also includes a headlamp washer system, headlight range control, and a separate daytime running light. Matrix LED headlamps are mucho expensive and this option is well worth the money, especially if you struggle to see well at night.

As for tyres? The standard 17-inch 5-double spoke style cast alloy wheels with 225/50 rubber won't flinch too severely if you hit a pothole. 18-inch wheels cost from R12 609 while the 19-inch numbers will set you back from R28 750. Ouch.

 

2. Black headliner fabric

On the interior side of things, you'll find that the stylish steering wheel with satellite buttons is already wrapped in leather, but if you opt for the heating function, you'll fork out another R2 673,25. Is this really necessary? We think not. However, I am prepared to spend R3 924,12 on black headliner  (this is the fabric that covers your car's "ceiling"), because pale headliner gets full of grubby fingerprints so easily. Your A5 will look better for longer if you spec this, and when trade-in time comes, you'll be glad you did.

The Audi A5 comes with standard leather/leatherette seats and I am quite happy to just stick with this. Nougat Brown looks very upmarket and I would opt for this colour scheme free of charge (and whichever colour you choose is then also echoed on the dashboard). If you do opt for an Alcantara suede/leather combo it's R6 557,02 but your options for colours are limited. I think that a full Milano Leather package is an unnecessary option at R13 981.58.  

 

3. City Assistance package with Park Assist

It's in the tech department where leaving boxes un-ticked gets difficult. At least Audi Drive Select is standard, which enables you to drive your A5 in different modes. I won't bother with Dynamic steering at over 16k. But assistance systems such as City Assistance package with Park Assist package including parking aid plus (R32 785.09) will have me throwing my money at the Audi salesperson. Fortunately specifications such as 6 airbags, stability and traction control, a start/stop system, and cruise control are standard fare. Audi never skimps on safety features.

 

4. Audi virtual cockpit

One thing I will most definitely dig out another R 8 574, 56 for, is Audi's virtual cockpit. (I also mention it my Audi A5 Coupé 2.0 T FSI quattro Sport S tronic review here.) And if you want the smartphone interface (such as Apple CarPlay), prepare to pay R 4 993 42.

 

5. 3-Zone climate control

Lastly, an expensive but worthwhile option is the air-conditioning with 3-zone climate control system. While I think that R9 442,11 is a rather high price for you and your partner to have your own separate temperature settings, it could potentially save your relationship, and divorces are pricey these days...
