The Bentley Mulsanne was introduced in 2011 but since then has seen various styling and performance updates applied. The latest iteration to come from the British automaker was the Bentley Mulsanne 6.75 Edition by Mulliner which was restricted to just 30 examples. This last iteration pays homage to the 6.75-litre, V8 petrol motor that has powered many of the marque's most famed models.
Since then the Flying Spur was positioned as Bentley's flagship model. However, while we can write a novel on the history and success of the brand, this article focuses on the top three safety features of the outgoing Mulsanne model, let us jump in.
1. Airbags
Airbags have become a standard feature on most vehicles sold today, however, some cars offer more than others. The Bentley Mulsanne comes fitted with no less than 6 airbags as standard equipment. This includes front and side airbags for both front occupants as well as curtain airbags for the rear occupants.
The front airbags for the front occupants also feature dual-stage functionality, this means that there are two inflation devices. The one inflation device is responsible for inflating the airbag up to 70% while the secondary inflation device is responsible for the other 30%. This is so that in high-speed collisions, the airbags are filled to 100% its potential while in slower collisions the airbag is only filled to 70% of its potential for a softer impact.
2. Forward Collision Mitigation
Another standard feature is the forward collision mitigation system. Utilising a radar/sensor installed towards the top of the windscreen, the system monitors the speed of the vehicle ahead. Should the system detect the vehicle ahead reducing speed quickly or calculate an imminent collision, the system will visibly and audibly warn the driver while increasing brake pressure to slow the vehicle. Should the driver not respond, the system will automatically increase the brake pressure to avoid or reduce the impact of a forward collision.
3. Driver-assist systems
As standard, the Bentley Mulsanne feature ABS brakes with brake assist. Furthermore, the British automaker has incorporated traction and stability control systems which will cut engine power and apply braking to the wheels to assist the driver to gain control of the vehicle. The Bentley is also installed with a blind spot monitoring system which with a small light in the wing mirror indicate if there is a vehicle present.
Front and rear parking sensors also feature as standard, however, the customer can opt for a more advanced solution that further incorporate cameras around the vehicle. Two of these cameras are also installed to the front of the vehicle and is aimed at the sides which allow the driver to see oncoming traffic at a blind intersection on the 8.0-inch infotainment screen.
