All the latest Nissan X-Trails come equipped with ABS, EBD, brake assist, an electrical parking brake, hill-start assist and Nissan's Chassis Control. Prices start from R401 900 for the 2.0 Visia derivative to R523 800 for the flagship 2.5 4x4 Tekna model. (Read our Nissan X-Trail 1.6 dCi Tekna AWD review here.)
Chassis Control includes Active Ride control as well as Active Trace Control. Ride Control monitors and moderates the vehicle's engine and brakes to counteract the pitching motion caused by bumps in the road. This isn't really as much of a safety feature as it is a built-in comfort feature. But the real life-saving stuff, such as Active Trace Control, you'll find below:
1. Active Trace Control
Active Trace Control is a safety feature that's is an extension of stability control, or ESP, which means that you stay in perfect control of your car should you have to swerve or encounter an unexpected sharp curve. It keeps a close eye on a number of factors, such as the line that the vehicle is travelling in, and if it matches your steering input. For example: If it finds that you're giving too much throttle for the direction that the wheels are in, it will apply the brakes to the inside wheels to keep you on track, so to speak.
2. Six airbags
Every X-Trail in the lineup has a total of six airbags, including curtain airbags. Before airbags were invented, people didn't often get out of vehicles that had been written off, alive. If you regularly travel with your kids, curtain airbags are quite a big selling point. They stretch all the way to the rear to ensure that your most precious cargo is kept safe.
3. Nissan Intelligent Mobility
Thanks to an array of cameras, sensors, and radar, the top-tier X-Trail derivatives are as safe as a posh Japanese neighbourhood. If your budget allows for the flagship TEKNA derivatives, you'll have an array of intelligent and semi-autonomous safety features at your fingertips, such as:
- Intelligent Blind Spot Intervention – This warns you of vehicles in blind spots diagonally behind the car.
- Intelligent Lane Intervention – This alerts you when the X-Trail veers from its lane.
- IntelligentCross Traffic Alert – When backing out of a parking space, this feature detects and warns you of vehicles that are approaching behind the X-Trail.
- Intelligent Emergency Braking – This system uses radar technology to keep an eye on your speed and proximity to the vehicle in front of you, and will alert you before engaging the brakes if you fail to react in time.
- Intelligent Forward Collision Warning – This will help to alert you of an impending collision with a slower moving or stationary car.
- Intelligent Auto Headlights – Prevents dazzling the eyes of other road users by automatically changing between high and low beam when it detects oncoming vehicles at night.
- Intelligent Around View Monitor (with moving object detection) – a support technology that helps you to manoeuver your X-Trail more easily by giving you a bird's eye view of your vehicle and its surroundings.
