Should you buy a used Hyundai Exter?

While the Hyundai Exter is still brand new, should you consider a used model when it gets a little older?

Buying a Car2 min read

The Hyundai Exter is Hyundai's smallest new crossover, or micro-SUV, which competes with other compact crossovers like the Suzuki Fronx and Ignis. Should you buy a pre-loved model? (Find them here on AutoTrader!)

The Hyundai Exter is cheap and cheerful, but should you buy a used one?

The Exter's pedigree

The Exter is based on Hyundai's Grand i10 model, which has been around for quite some time and has proved to be mettle over the years. Remember that only the top-spec model is fitted with stability control, but 6 airbags are standard across the board.

The Grand i10 is one of the entry-level cars that we regularly recommend, so you certainly can't go wrong with the Exter. Find out if it's good for new drivers here.

What about the Hyundai Exter's warranty?

Hyundai says the following about their warranty:

"We are so confident in the technology, materials, and workmanship that goes into every new Hyundai passenger vehicle that it is backed by a 7-year, 200 000 km warranty, the best and most comprehensive vehicle warranty in South Africa."

If you buy a relatively young Exter, the long warranty is a great selling point, as you'll have years of worry-free motoring ahead.

Their warranty covers elements such as:

  • The Timing Chain
  • Cylinder block
  • Cylinder head and crankcase
  • Head Gasket
  • Flywheel and engine mountings
  • Prop shafts, axle shafts
  • Front and rear differentials
  • Front and rear hub bearings
  • Constant velocity joints
  • The transfer case

To see exactly what is covered, you can download the warranty here.

Should you buy a used model?

We certainly can recommend the Hyundai Exter, but we always urge potential owners of any car brand to find out from other owners if they are happy with their purchase and the after-sales service they receive. The sale is usually made pretty swiftly, but when things go wrong, many OEMs don't show quite the same level of commitment.

There are also Hyundai owner's groups on Facebook and other platforms, such as Hello Peter, where you can research and read owners' reviews.
