Old vs New Peugeot 2008: What are the top 5 differences?

We look at the differences between the pre-facelift and facelift models of the first generation Peugeot 2008 compact urban crossover from 2014 to present.

The Peugeot 2008 is a compact crossover that picks up where the 207 SW left off, offering more space, an improved chassis all while retaining the same energy that the 207 SW displayed. It was first launched in 2013 with South Africa seeing the first batch in early 2014. In 2017 it underwent a facelift that saw the addition of several key elements.

1. A new 6-speed automatic gearbox for 2017
The original 2008 was offered locally with a 5-speed manual gearbox with overseas markets getting a 4-speed automatic. The 2017 facelift saw South Africa get the option to choose a new 6-speed automatic in the Allure trim with the GT Line getting the auto 'box as standard fitment. This gives customers a choice of four models in total, with two engine and two gearboxes spread across the range.

2. Updated styling for 2017
For 2017, the styling remained largely unchanged with only the keenest enthusiast able to distinguish between the facelift and the former model – that's not to say that there weren't changes though.

Subtle re-sculpting of the bonnet gives the 2017 model a more upright grille and raises the bonnet line ever so slightly. Minor changes to the grille include a larger lion badge and diamond-like grille pattern.

At the rear, the taillights are now LED items, incorporating the claw-shape elements that are aligned with Peugeot's new design language.

3. Improved infotainment
In 2017, the 2008 got more out of Peugeot's i-Cockpit concept with a revised 7-inch touchscreen and new software. This system now features Mirrorlink and Apple CarPlay with GT Line models benefitting from satellite navigation as standard. It still retains AM/FM, AUX and USB-input as well as Bluetooth connectivity.

4. New engines for a new range
While the first 2008 offering was made available with a single engine derivative, the 1.6-litre petrol, the new 2008 is available with a 1.6-litre turbodiesel or 1.2-litre turbo petrol in the Allure Auto and GT Line models. The 1.6-litre diesel produces 68 kW and 230 Nm torque while the 1.2-litre PureTech engine makes 81 kW and 205 Nm. These engines also improve fuel consumption figures across the board.

5. A sporty alternative
The 2017 facelift also saw the introduction of the GT Line model, a model that stands out from the crowd, even when parked. Featuring gloss black trimmings and GT Line specific 17-inch alloys wheels, the GT Line is instantly recognisable.

The interior is a half-leather affair while Peugeot's innovative Grip Control system, which optimises the drivetrain response, is standard fitment.
