The Audi A4 used to be available in sedan, cabriolet and station-wagon body styles, however, is now only offered as a sedan and wagon. The Audi A5 which shares a platform with the A4 expands on the German automaker's offerings to include a coupé, cabriolet and Sportback styled vehicles. For this article, we will be focussing specifically on the A5 Coupé.
1. Styling
The biggest change in styling happens upfront with a revised and wider single frame honeycomb grille. The grille is also less curved and feature intake slats at the top which harks back to the ones found on the Audi quattro cars the brand produced during the 1980s. While the lower front features a new blade-like fin, the rear sees a new diffuser and trapezoidal exhaust tips. The new A5 range also comes fitted with Matrix LED headlights and LED rear lights as standard equipment.
When opting for the A5 Coupé you will only be able to choose between the entry-level specification and S line trim. The entry-level models come fitted with 17-inch cast aluminium wheels, door sills with aluminium inserts in the front, matte black radiator grille with a chrome frame, matte black grained side air intakes and rear diffuser, matte silver aluminium exhaust tips and a bar tailgate in chrome.
The higher specified S line variants incorporate 18-inch cast aluminium wheels, aluminium inserts with S lettering on the front sills, S line emblem on the front fenders, widened side skirts in body colour finish, sports suspension, S line specific radiator grille in titanium black and chrome framed, S line specific rear diffuser in titanium matt black matte silver aluminium rear trim and a bar tailgate in chrome.
2. Infotainment
One of the more recent developments at Audi has been the latest iteration of the MMI infotainment system. Centrally mounted on the dashboard is a 10.1-inch touch display which is slightly angled towards the driver and is the main control centre of the new infotainment system. Fitted as standard equipment on all A5 models is the Audi connect roof module which allows the occupants to easily access emergency services such as towing, ambulance, police or the fire brigade.
For owners who opted for the Technology Package, functionality such as live and integrated Google Earth navigation becomes available. The latter feature allows drivers to plan routes through the myAudi app and send destinations directly to the vehicle. The app and thus vehicle also provide the driver with information such as trading hours, parking availability, live traffic information and weather updates based on the route and destination search.
The new myAudi app also remotely provide vehicle owners with information such as fuel level, range, service appointments and warning messages. It also allows the owner to set a speed limit on the vehicle or construct a geo-fence which notifies the owner when the vehicle goes outside a designated area. In front of the driver is a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster installed with the Audi Virtual Cockpit as standard and is controlled via the multifunction steering wheel.
3. Interior specification
Audi has also introduced a new way of specifying your vehicle locally. The package concept incorporates different features into pre-determined and easily understood packages. This allows a future owner to easily identify their needs on interior functionality and choose the corresponding package instead of specifying each individual item. There are three packages to choose from and the items included are as follows.
The Technology package sees the fitment of MMI navigation plus with MMI touch. Also incorporated is the full functionality of the Audi connect system and contour ambient lighting on the interior of the vehicle. Those who opt for the Comfort package will get electric front seats with seat heaters, a rearview camera and storage package. The Sport package offers owners a flat bottomed multi-function steering wheel in 3 spoke design, shift paddles for the tiptronic transmission and sport seats as well as black lining on the interior.
