The Alfa Romeo is a beautiful automobile, and it has the style and grace that could only come from the pen of the most passionate of car makers. We take a look the Giulia model and its different trim levels, to see which one represents the best value for money.

Italians love their home brands. We know that they are rabid, passionate supporters of anything that bears the red, green and white logo, and it’s great to see that level of dedication. But within this group is an even more fanatical fan base, the Alfisti – those staunch defenders of the Alfa Romeo badge and its heritage.

No automotive discussion is complete without them mentioning the Alfa name, and the passion it evokes from its passionate motoring soul. This discussion is however not about passion or soul, nor dare I say reliability. Rather, it’s about the value for money that you get in terms of standard safety equipment and luxury trim, when buying one of the three Giulia variants offered by Alfa South Africa.

So, without upsetting the Alfisti, let’s take a closer look at what you get for your Rands.

Alfa Romeo Giulia 2.0T

The Giulia base model arrives with an impressive standard trim level. The sticker price of R616 900 will get you a luxury sedan with full alphabet soup of safety systems as standard. ABS, EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution), BAS (Brake Assist System), FCW (Forward Collision Warning), LDW (Lane Departure Warning) and AEB (Automatic Emergency Braking) are all in the mix, as well as 16-inch alloy wheels, a black cloth interior, electrically adjustable seats and a beautifully-integrated infotainment system.

Alfa Romeo Giulia 2.0T Super

The Super trim level comes in at R686 900, and bumps up the luxury and trim levels by adding 17- or 18-inch alloys, a leather interior, a bigger and better infotainment system, and a 7” TFT colour cluster for the driver.

Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio

The Quadrifoglio brings everything the lower models have, and then dials it up to eleven with a high-power engine and a drivetrain that can put supercars to shame. It also gets adaptive cruise control and Blind Spot Monitoring as standard, on top of all the other safety features.

With an eye watering price tag of R 1 462 000, the beast from the Mediterranean is out of the budget of many buyers, and with limited numbers available, very difficult to get a hold of in South Africa.

Verdict

It goes without saying here that we are putting passion and performance aside, and stating that the 2.0T Super is our choice here. It represents the best of both worlds, pulling the extensive list of safety features from the base model and a few of the luxury options from the Quadrifoglio, and blending them into one passion project.
