The updated version of the third generation of Volkswagen’s Tiguan was launched locally recently, sporting an updated exterior and interior styling, the brand’s new badge and a host of new features that make it one of the best products in its segment.
There are two engines available in the range, a 1.4-litre turbo petrol that produces 110kW and 250Nm and is paired with a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox that sends power to the front wheels and a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine that produces 162kW and 350Nm and is mated with a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox that sends power to all four wheels.
Let’s have a look at three areas that are important when determining whether the Tiguan is a good family vehicle or not.
Space
Measuring 4 509mm in length, 1 839mm tall and 1 839mm wide, including the mirrors, the Tiguan is a proper mid-sized SUV. The interior is spacious enough for five occupants and there is an impressive 520-litre boot, which extends to between 615-litres and 1 655-litres with the rear seats folded flat, making this a very spacious product indeed.
Comfort
All Tiguan models come with dual-clutch automatic gearboxes, the option of cloth or leather seats, soft-touch material throughout the interior, front and rear electric windows, keyless entry/start, a colour touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, 3 USB ports, a multifunction steering wheel and climate control. This makes Tiguan impressive from a comfort perspective.
Safety
The Euro NCAP crash test evaluation programme tested the pre-facelift Tiguan in 2016 where it achieved the maximum 5-Star rating, including 96% for adult occupant safety, 84% for child occupant safety, 72% for pedestrian safety and 68% for its safety assistance systems.
The updated model comes with a raft of safety features including 6 airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchor points, the Light and Visibility Package which includes an auto-dimming mirror, rain sensor and auto headlight control and High Beam Assist. There is also Hill Descent Control, Head-Up Display, Adaptive Cruise Control which includes Front Assist and City Emergency Braking, Trailer Assist with park Assist and surround-view camera, fog lamps, LED headlights, traction control a tyre pressure monitor.
Verdict
Looking at all of the criteria, it becomes clear that the updated Tiguan is a very good car for families, blending practicality with efficiency and safety in a functional and attractive package that appeals to a broad audience.
