Is the Volkswagen T-Cross good for new drivers?

Looking at a Volkswagen T-Cross as your first car? Let's find out why it may or may not be ideal for a young driver.

Buying a Car

The T-Cross is Volkswagen's Polo-based crossover and it's proved to be hugely successful. If you're looking for a handsome and reliable crossover with good safety credentials, is the T-Cross the car to own?

The short answer is yes! While new T-Cross models may be out of reach for new drivers, low-mileage, used models on AutoTrader can be bought for as little as R285 000.

What makes it a good car for a new driver?

It's easy to manoeuvre, but spacious enough for a new driver's needs (plus the rear seats can slide and recline, depending on your need for less boot space and more legroom), filled with slick technology, sufficiently punchy yet light on petrol, and as safe as a car in this segment can be. It's also one of the best-looking compact crossovers in my books, and the riding height allows for excellent all-'round visibility.

What would deter new buyers from the T-Cross?

Only the new-car price. That's why used is better!

Prices for new models start from R393 400 for the T-Cross 1.0TSI 70kW Comfortline (manual) to R518 800 for the top-of-the-range T-Cross 1.5TSI 110kW R-Line model. (January 2023 pricing.) This is not the kind of money that young student drivers have.

Any potential issues?

The manual model gets my vote, with an eye on longevity.

If you plan on keeping the T-Cross for a very long time, I would suggest buying a 70kW 5-speed manual transmission model, as DSG gearboxes can be very expensive to repair if something goes wrong.
