Is the Jeep Cherokee expensive to maintain?

Despite no longer being offered locally, the Jeep Cherokee might be a tempting pre-owned proposition for local consumers, but are they expensive to maintain?

Buying a Car

American automaker Jeep is famous for producing vehicles that are as capable of heading off-road as they are tackling the daily commute, with the Cherokee epitomising this. Is the Cherokee expensive to repair, though? We have some data that will answer that question.

It is difficult to determine the exact costs of repairing a Jeep Cherokee since each dealership has different labour and parts price rates. We will be using the AA Spare Parts Guide, which compares the Cherokee with several key rivals, making it simple to determine whether it is expensive to maintain or not.

The 2021 AA Spare Parts Pricing Guide

The AA Spare Parts Pricing report is an incredibly useful tool, as it allows you to compare the cost of ownership with various products across several segments with models that they compete with.

The cars in the AA Spare Parts Pricing Guide were evaluated in 3 departments: service parts, maintenance parts, and body repair parts. Service parts relate to the standard service consumables, while maintenance parts are the long-term ownership items that require periodic inspection, maintenance or replacement, and body repair parts indicate how much it would cost to replace body panels in the event of a collision.

In the latest (2021) report, the Cherokee's parts pricing basket is compared with key rivals such as the Ford Everest, Isuzu mu-X, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Toyota Fortuner, among others.

Looking at the servicing costs of the Cherokee, things look respectable for the Jeep, with the Cherokee's basket totalling R12 077.89, making it the third most expensive with the cheapest being the Isuzu mu-X at R7 444.50. The Toyota Fortuner is the most expensive to service, with a total price of R13 726.95.

The maintenance parts section reads nicely for the Jeep with the Cherokee being the second cheapest to maintain, with a basket price of R17 203.11 and the Fortuner now being the most cost-effective at R14 237.79, with the mu-X coming out most expensive at R24 906.76.

The body repair section sees the Cherokee as the most expensive, with a total of R286 909.43, with the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport the second most expensive with a total of R207 004.10. The most affordable model in terms of body repair parts is the Ford Everest, with a total of R87 757.43.  In total, the Jeep Cherokee is the most expensive model to maintain within its segment, with its total parts basket being R316 190.43 or 42.14% of its list price in 2021.

Verdict

Despite being the most expensive model to maintain when considering all three categories in the AA Spare Parts Pricing Guide, the Jeep performed well in the basic servicing and large maintenance parts categories, only losing out when it comes to the body repair section of the guide, making it reasonably inexpensive to service and maintain, but expensive to repair in the event of a collision.
