Is Lamborghini good for families?

Lamborghini is not a brand that jumps to mind when you are in the market for your next family vehicle. However, the answer to the question, if they are good for families, might surprise you.

Buying a Car

When one hears the name, Lamborghini, the first thing that might come to mind is the stunning sports and supercars the brand has given the world over the years. It is certainly not a name that is associated with practical family vehicles. However, the Italian automaker has developed cars with more than two seats and added practicality throughout its history.

Enthusiasts of the brand will quickly remind you of the 1968 Lamborghini Espada which took shape as a four-seater coupe model. Then how can we forget the LM002 that came around in 1986, better known as the Rambo Lambo, the model took shape as a four-seater SUV. This leads us to a vehicle offered by Lamborghini today that might just tick all the boxes for a family vehicle, the Urus. Let us jump and see if it will suit the family life.

Lamborghini Urus

The Lamborghini Urus was first unveiled in 2017 and went on sale in 2018. Being an SUV, the model appeals to a wider audience that wants the styling and performance associated with a Lamborghini but with a practical layout for daily use. Let us take a look at some of the most important characteristics for a family vehicle to find out if the Urus will meet all the requirements.

Performance

An area in which the Lamborghini excels is in performance. Although the model doesn't come with the V10 or V12 engines the Italian automaker is famous for, it does retain quite a powerful powertrain. Under the bonnet, customers can expect to find a 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged, V8 petrol engine coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The combination results in 478 kW and 850 Nm of torque being sent to all four wheels. This means that the Urus will sprint from 0-100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 305 km/h. This level of performance, while more than ample for family use, does affect fuel consumption a lot. While Lamborghini claims an average fuel consumption return of 12.6 L / 100 km, the real-world figure might be a little higher.

Space

In terms of the interior layout, customers can opt for either a four-seat or five-seat layout. While the five-seat configuration will provide more seating, the four-seat arrangement provides more space for each individual passenger. However, in the four-seater, owners will only get access to 574-litres of luggage space, whereas the five-seater provides 616-litres.

Safety

Being a performance SUV, customers can expect that Lamborghini has fitted some of the best ABS brakes and bolstered it with an electronic brake assist system. Furthermore, the vehicle is kept in check with standard stability and traction control systems. To bolster safety and off-road utility, Lamborghini has also incorporated hill-start assist and hill-descent control systems.

In terms of airbags, the Urus comes fitted with six units as standard but customers can optionally fit up to eight. For parents that need to install baby or child seats, the model does offer ISOfix mounting points at the outer rear seats.

Verdict

Although the Lamborghini name is synonymous with sports and supercars, the Urus changes things for the automaker.  While the SUV market certainly has options that are much more affordable that will match the Lamborghini Urus in terms of safety and space. None offer the unique styling or the staggering performance of the Italian model. Nevertheless, the question was whether Lamborghini is good for families, and the answer is yes.
