In 2017, Dodge made the decision that they will no longer be producing right-hand drive vehicles for export and, as a result, the brand is no longer available locally. However, there are a few still roaming around on the roads and in used car dealerships. But the question is, will it be a good option as a used car?
The last of the Dodge Calibers touched down in South Africa in 2011 and offers a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine that produces 115 kW and 190 Nm of torque. While not consuming large amounts, the Dodge Caliber is not quite what you would call frugal with a claimed average fuel consumption return of 7.4 L / 100 km. If a customer is happy with this claim, there are still a few areas to take into consideration before purchasing a used example.

Reliability
Although the individual reliability of each example heavily relies on how well it was cared for by its previous owner/s, we can gather some insight into the overall dependability of the model through customer surveys. One survey completed by hundreds if not thousands of Caliber owners comes from J.D Power.
According to the results of the survey conducted on the 2011 model year Dodge Caliber, the model scored 79 out of a potential 100 points for reliability. This survey measures all the defects as well as malfunctions experienced by actual owners on all aspects of the vehicle from mechanical to electrical.
Things to look out for before buying
Before you get your pen out to sign the dotted line, there are a few areas to inspect as each used example will show wear and tear that is individual to the previous owner/s. As the vehicle is just over a decade old, it is important to visually inspect the engine for any leaks or oil around the gaskets. Furthermore, keep an eye on the exhaust fumes to see whether the smoke is blue or black, which could provide clues to the condition of the inside of the engine.
Listen carefully as the engine idles to hear if there are any rattling noises or ticking noises that shouldn't be there. Considering the vehicle's age, inspect the suspension system and connecting rods and bushes inside the wheel well as they might require replacing. The condition of rubber parts such as belts, pipes and CV boots also needs to be inspected for cracks.
After the thorough mechanical inspection, go around the vehicle and focus your attention on any scuffs or dents and panel gaps as this could be a clue as to whether the model was in an accident previously. Then move to the interior and test all the electric buttons and components to be sure they all work.
Verdict
When considering the overall reliability score of the 2011 Dodge Caliber in the J.D. Power Customer Survey, the model seems to be a good choice as you shouldn't experience much trouble with it. However, be sure to find a used example that has a well-documented ownership history to be sure of that note. Should something go wrong, that is where things might get a little expensive, as Dodge no longer operates in South Africa and new parts will have to be imported from the US.
