How To - Importing used cars into SA
Importing a used car into South Africa can be a very daunting task but it can be done. A used car can only be imported under very specific circumstances.
A. You are an SA citizen who has lived and worked outside the country for more than 24 months and have had the car registered in your name there.
B. You are a foreign national who has lived and worked in SA for more than 24 months and have proof of residence.
C. The car is a vintage model, collectors item, family inheritance, has been specially made or is a race car. You will need to obtain a letter of authority from the SABS and fill out reams of paperwork from SARS. You will also be responsible for all costs pertaining to the import such as transport, logistics and of course, import duties and taxes.
