How much does the driving test cost?

Getting your driving license is a daunting task, and having to worry about the associated costs should be the least of your concerns.

The DLTC (driving license testing centre) can be a harrowing experience for those not familiar with the facility. To help you out on the big day we recommend you do the following.

On the day of your test be on time and prepared with the following documentation.

1. Learner’s license

2. Green barcoded ID book or ID card + 1 Photocopy

3. Driving test booking number

4. Four black and white ID photos

You can save some time and go and get an eye test done at an approved optometrist but one never knows with the individual departments and they may require you to take their on-site eye test.

Pay your fee before taking the test, cost for a Code E/EB should be about R180 rand and get a receipt, you will need this if you pass the test. Phone the testing centre beforehand, just to make sure.

Once you have passed the test you will need to pay another R165 for the issue of the driver’s license card that will be valid for five years from date of issue and you will be immediately issued with a temporary driving permit valid for six months at no extra charge.

These costs don’t include what the driving school will charge you for the use of the car, for the test, or the cost of the lessons and their time in helping you secure a booking.
