At the heart of the i20 N Line sits a 1.0-litre turbocharged engine, producing a respectable 90kW of power and 172Nm of torque. These figures might not seem earth-shattering, but considering the car's weight and size, they promise a spirited drive. You should be fine if you don't challenge a Polo GTI to a race.
The most powerful engine in the i20 range, a turbocharged 3-cylinder petrol mill, has been reserved for the i20 N Line. It delivers up to 89,5 kW at 6 000 r/min. and 171,6 Nm maximum torque between 1 500 and 4 000 engine revolutions per minute.
Firmer suspension settings help to give the N Line outstanding roadholding and a sure-footed grip in corners. The i20 rides on a McPherson strut suspension with gas-filled shock dampers in front, and a coupled torsion beam axle with coil springs and gas-filled shock dampers at the rear.- Hyundai SA

Is the Hyundai i20 fast enough?
With a 0-100 km/h time of 9.9 seconds, the i20 N Line isn't going to set any drag strip records. However, it's quick enough for most driving conditions. The real fun lies in the engine's responsiveness and the way it delivers power. The turbocharger provides a healthy dose of torque from low revs, making it feel lively in urban traffic and on winding roads where it sticks to the tarmac like glue!
Hyundai i20 fuel efficiency
While performance is important, so is fuel economy. The i20 N Line claims a combined fuel consumption of 6.9 L/100 km; in our experience, it was right on the money. This is a decent figure for a turbocharged petrol engine, especially considering this i20 N Line's sporty nature.
If you switch to Eco, however, 6.2 L/100 km is very doable. There is also a Normal mode, but we didn't employ it much.
Hyundai i20 ride and handling
The i20 N Line is equipped with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, which offers quick shifts and efficient gear changes and paddle shifters on the steering wheel. The car's suspension is tuned for a sporty feel, providing good body control and responsive handling. However, it's worth noting that the ride can be a bit firm on rough roads - as you'd expect from a performance-orientated hatch.
Features and equipment in the Hyundai i20
At R467 500, the i20 N Line certainly doesn't skimp on features inside and out.
- Exterior features include N-specific design elements, LED headlamps with signature DRLs, 16-inch alloys, an updated grille pattern, rear twin exhaust pipes, and a sporty tailgate spoiler with side wings.
- Cabin highlights include a sunroof, ambient lighting, sporty interior detailing, climate control, a wireless charging tray, and leatherette sport seats. The i20 N Line is started by a button switch.
- Safety equipment includes ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and HAC (Hill-start Assist Control).
Is the Hyundai i20 worth the price?
The i20 N Line is good-looking, well-equipped, and a lot of fun to drive. However, the R467 500 price tag is certainly steep for a small, warm hatchback. If you're looking for a sporty and well-equipped car, the i20 N Line won't disappoint. But if you're on a tight budget, you might want to explore other options with more powerful engines in the segment.
What can you buy for the same price as a Hyundai i20?
-The top-spec Opel Corsa 1.2T GS Line costs R459 900. It has 96kW and 230Nm and loads of kerb-side appeal.
-You can buy a Volkswagen Polo GTI for R559 200 for a few rands more. It's a much bigger, more practical car with much higher power figures.
-Into saving petrol? A Toyota Corolla hatch 1.8 Hybrid XS can be had for R536 500.
-How about something more premium? The Audi A1 Sportback 35TFSI Advanced will set you back R557 200.

Verdict
The energetic and fun-to-drive Hyundai i20 1.0T N Line is a bit of a boutique offering that will be snapped up by a very specific sort of person (young, probably male, successful, without kids?), but considering what else is out there, it probably won't be my first choice.
